Stephanie Hussey Wins Triple to Pace FIU to Senior Day Win vs. Rival FAU

The FIU Panthers celebrated senior day with a win over in-state rival FAU. Stephanie Hussey put on a strong performance, winning 3 races individually. She started out with a dominant 200 free, winning in 1:51.95 ahead of teammate Taylor Grabenhorst (1:55.25).

In a close battle with FAU’s Sara Gyertyanffy, Hussey came from behind to get her hands to the wall first in a 56.31 to 56.65 finish. She closed out her schedule in the 400 IM. Hussey was body lengths ahead by the end of the backstroke leg and never gave up her lead as she won the race in 4:28.83.

After taking 2nd in the 200 free, Grabenhorst won the 200 breast by nearly 5 seconds with a 2:19.82. The 100 breast went to 100 fly runner-up Gyertyanffy of FIU. She was well ahead of the field in 1:02.76.

MIAMI (Feb. 1, 2020) – In the final FIU swim and dive home meet of the season, eight seniors were honored as the Panthers picked up a win over conference foe FAU to improve to 7-3 in dual meet action.

“Today was a special day for our eight seniors. It’s great to have them go out big to end their home season like today,” said Head Coach Randy Horner.

First up on the deck was the 200 medley relay squad. The Panther team of Julia MirandaSara GyertyanffyKelsie Campbell and Lamija Medosevic took first with a time of 1:43.97, setting the tone for the rest of the meet.

Stepahnie Hussey and Taylor Grabenhorst followed with the top two spots in the event. Hussey swam a time of 1:51.95 and Grabenhorst chased with her time of 1:55.25. Medosevic touched second in the 100 back event (57.10) while Miranda followed in third with a time of 57.82.

The 100 breast was captured by Sara Gyertyanffy who touched with a time of 1:02.76, while Delaine Goll was in the number two spot at 1:05.54. Emily Cordovi secured second in the 200 fly swimming a time of 2:05.72.

Paloma Sanchez touched .08 shy of the top spot in the 50 free event with her time of 24.35. Helga Fodor and Kasia Kolodziej followed in third and fourth place with times of 24.63 and 24.65, respectively.

Nocentini dominated the 100 free, tapping first at 51.31 and teammate Medosevic trailed in second with her time of 52.00. Miranda battled from wire to wire in the 200 back, finishing second with a time of 2:08.36. Grabenhorst  went on to seal the deal in the 200 breaststroke when she touched at 2:19.82, with Goll right behind her at 2:24.30.

Rachel Whitaker raced hard in the 500 free to tally another first-place finish (5:16.50). Stephanie Hussey tacked on two more wins in the lanes, first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.31 and later in the 400 IM with a swim time of 4:28.83.

The Panthers took the 200 free relay with the team of Nocentini, Fodor, Sanches and Medosevic (1:35.32).

For the second weekend in a row, Mandy Song swept both springboard events. She posted a score of 321.68 from the 1-meter and a score of 332.10 from the 3-meter. Maha Gouda followed in the from the 1-meter with her score of 287.85 with Rachel Foord and Brittany Haskell in fourth and fifth-place with score of 278.55 and 261.98, respectively. Foord also took the number two spot from the 3-meter with her score of 324.60.

MIAMI– The Florida Atlantic University women’s swimming & diving team posted several top finishes on Saturday morning at FIU, but fell short of the Panthers. FAU recorded four first-place finishes, six second place feats and eight third place showings in the 175-103 loss in Miami.

  • The 200 medley relay team of Abby MarshallFatimah WestbrookGrace Molinaro and Mackenzie Brown started the day with second place in the 200 medley relay (1:45.41)
  • Marshall had an incredible day in Miami, putting up two individual first place finishes in the 100 back (56.63) and 200 back (2:05.65)
  • Westbrook finished the 100 breast in second (1:05.54) and 100 free in third (53.63)
  • Spence Atkins captured first place in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.57. Danica Garbett followed in third (2:06.33)
  • Brown came up with a huge first place showing in the 50 free (24.47)
  • Kirsten Hobson finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.27 and was followed by Sharon Kok in third (5:22.36)
  • Sarah Martin put up third in the 200 free (1:55.25) and Hobson took third in the 200 back (2:10.46). Haley O’Meara also touched the wall third in the 200 breast (2:27.29)
  • Atkins later tallied second in the 400 IM (4:33.84), as Garbett followed in third (4:35.96)
  • Brown, Westbrook, Kelsey Witkay and Marshall ended the day of swimming with second in the 200 free relay (1:38.90)
  • Alicia Mora tallied second in the 1-meter (293.48)
  • Malvina Catalano scored 273.30 to tally third in the 3-meter

The divers will have one last meet on Friday in Coral Springs before the men’s and women’s respective conference championships. FAU’s men’s team will take on the Costal Collegiate Sports Association Championships from Feb. 19-22 in Knoxville, Tenn., while the women will head to Atlanta for the Conference USA Championships from Feb. 26-29.
