Stubblety-Cook Scorches 2:06.28 200 Breast Aussie Record, 0.16 Off Chupkov’s WR

2021 SWIMMING AUSTRALIA OLYMPIC TRIALS

During the 4th day of the 2021 Australian Olympic Swimming Trials, Zac Stubblety-Cook rattled off a 2:06.28 200 breaststroke which is a new Australian, Commonwealth, and All Comer record. The swim from Stubblety-Cook makes him the second-fastest 200 breaststroker in history and gets him within 0.16 seconds of the current world record held by Russian’s Anton Chupkov at a 2:06.12.

Split Comparison:

Stubblety-Cook 2021 Chupkov 2019
50 29.40 29.73
100 1:01.73 (32.33) 1:02.22 (32.49)
150 1:34.24 (32.51) 1:34.23 (32.01)
100 2:06.28 (32.04) 2:06.12 (31.89)

While he was just off the world record, Stubblety-Cook got under Matthew Wilson‘s Australian and Commonwealth record of 2:06.67. Wilson posted that time at the 2019 World Swimming Championships which tied Ippei Watanabe‘s then-world record. Wilson’s record stood for only 1 day as Anton Chupkov lowered it the next day to a 2:06.12.

The swim is a solid improvement from his former PB in the event of 2:07.36 from the 2019 World Championships. He jumps up a number of spots in the world ranking and now sits in the #2 spot worldwide in history and is now one of 6 men to crack the 2:07 mark.

If I had to pick first and second and my life depended on it I would go Chupkov and Stubblety-Cook. But if SC could fix his start I might reverse the order.

So we might not see two former WR holders (most recent) in Tokyo.
Who would’ve thought that.

There’s more uncertainty in the world 200 breast than the 50 free, no who would’ve thought THAT!

Does it mean Wilson wont swim in Tokio?

I still think Australia needs a second breastroker as back up so it’s really between Wilson and Cave for that discretionary second spot but neither swam the qualifying time in either breastroke event

Neither have FINA A in the 100 at Swim AUS designated selection meet. Strike against both.

Wilson has one FINA A mark at 100 during FINA’s designated selection period. Cave finished ahead of Wilson at this meet. Probably weights 0.75 Wilson/Cave 0.50 points

Neither met the AUS QT in 200 at designated selection meet. Strike against both

Both have FINA A’s at selection meet. Wilson has more FINA A’s and considerably faster times plus finished ahead at selection meet. Probably weighs 0.80 Wilson/Cave 0.30 points.

Cave’s case is hinging almost solely on his finishing 2nd in 100 but, even if nominated by Swim AUS, his place will be reliant where he sits in the seedings amongst those with FINA Bs.… Read more »

Looking at the splits, if Zac executed the same splits at Chupkov the first 2 50, he probably would’ve had a faster last 50. He really should just try to be in the lane next to Chupkov and pace off of him

This is hard to watch with Australian commentary, it’s all geared for wilson and when he misses it you can see then pain on his face. The last 25m was like watching Carson Foster fall apartment on the 400IM only Wilson gets reeled in by the qualification line.
Great swim by Cook tho!
