More about Sun Devil Coach Ryan Mallam:

Arizona State swimming head coach Bob Bowman named former Texas A&M associate head coach Ryan Mallam as the associate head coach of Sun Devil swimming,

“Ryan Mallam is a rising star in the coaching ranks and I am thrilled he has chosen to join us at Arizona State,” said Bowman. “His expertise in technique teaching and sprint coaching will be key elements to the success of our program. The depth of his resume and his previous experience as a head coach at the collegiate level will be a tremendous asset as we move the program forward.”

Spending the past two seasons as the associate head coach of Texas A&M men’s swimming program, Mallam coached the two fastest sprinters in school history. In his first season with the Aggies, Mallam coached sprinter Kyle Troskot to a new Texas A&M school record in the 50 free with a time of 19:32 in 2014. In addition to Troskot, Mallam’s athletes broke seven school records in his first year on staff.

Ryan Mallam - courtesy of Sun Devil Speed Swimming CampPrior to A&M, Mallam served as the head coach of perennial NJCAA powerhouse Indian River State College from 2010-13, where he led both the women’s and men’s teams to three NJCAA National Championships (2011, 2012, 2013). Mallam also had athletes set 19 National records and was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year for both the women and men’s programs in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, Mallam’s swimmer, Brad Tandy, became the fastest swimmer in the country with a time of 19.06 in the 50 free, the first time an NJCAA athlete set the top time in the country. Tandy won the NJCAA Championship in the 50 and 100 free and was named the NJCAA Male Swimmer of the Year in 2012.

Ryan Mallam - courtesy of Sun Devil Speed Swimming CampBefore joining one of college swimming’s most successful programs at Indian River, he led Limestone College to its best season in school history in his one season as head coach. After the 2009 season Limestone had the number 1 and 2 NCAA Division II ranked swimmers in the 50 free. At the 2009 conference championships, Limestone College set three national records, 22 team records and had 49 all-conference performances while producing the male swimmer of the meet. Limestone went on to qualify 14 swimmers to the NCAA Div. II Championships, the most in school history. During the season, the Saints broke 34 of 38 possible school records.

As an athlete, Mallam was a four-year letterman for South Carolina where he qualified for the US Open. In his career, Mallam was a junior national champion, a senior regional champion, and a Georgia state champion.
Mallam is joined at Arizona State by his wife, Ashley and son, Levi.

I was lucky to swim under Ryan as an age group swimmer. He transformed my stroke and helped me swim FAST! During summer breaks from college I would come home and ALWAYS learn something new to take back with me. He enables you to look at your stroke a different way. I highly recommend working with Ryan to improve your swimming!!

Ryan came in my senior year in college. I thought I was aware of my stroke, but he gave me a new outlook on how I followed through with my freestyle/backstroke. He gives you a different perspective towards your swimming, and explains it in a way that is easy to transfer in the water. I would highly recommend swimmers of any age to take part in Coach Mallam’s clinics and camps. You won’t regret it!

Ryan has a unique ability to transform swimmers who already have a proven record of success into amazing sprinters. Whether you are summer league swimmer or All-American D1 collegiate athlete, Ryan will teach you ways to improve your technique, gain strength and power, and enhance your flexibility. His track record as a successful sprinting coach is rooted in his true passion for the sport. He is always seeking for the latest drill or set and never stops learning. Ryan will make you swim fast.

Ryan’s style and coaching strategies can really bring new life into a swimmers stroke. First hand I was able to feel unique benefits in my technique after swimming with Ryan. Well placed comments and stroke isolation drills teach athletes ideal focal points while they swim. Ryan can undoubtably teach you something new about all the strokes, I would recommend giving his ideas a chance!
