Sun Takes Gold in the 200 freestyle on Day Two of the Chinese National Championships

Sun Yang told reporters yesterday that he wanted to use the Chinese National Championships in Huangshan as a testing ground to see where he was compared to his results at the Asian Games which were held almost a month ago. At the games Sun won gold in both the 1500 freestyle (14:49.75) and the 400 freestyle (4:43.23) as well as taking the silver in the 200 freestyle posting a time of 1:45.28.

Today Sun walked away with the win in the men’s 200 freestyle finishing in a time of 1:45.66 just off the time which he recorded at the Asian Games. He was followed by Qian Zhiyong who finished in a time of 1:48.96 and Xu Qiheng who touched in a time of 1:49.06.

Another Asian Games champion took home gold today in Huangshan as Lu Ying won the women’s 50 butterfly in a time of 26.09. She was followed by Qiu Yuhan who posted a 26.56 and Wu Yue who recorded a 26.70.

Asian Games silver medalist Xu Jiayu took the men’s 200 backstroke with ease winning the event in a time of 1:56.66. Li Guangyuan finished second in a time of 1:59.17 followed by Diao Jigong who touched in a time of 2:00.08.

With Olympic champion Ye Shiwen out of the mix in the women’s 200 IM several swimmers had a chance to claim the national crown. In a tight race Zhang Sishi took gold in a time of 2:14.33 followed by Fang Yi who touched in a time of 2:14.93 and Wang Xinya who finished in a time of 2:15.31.

Zhang Qibin took the men’s 50 butterfly beating Asian Games 50 and 100 freestyle champion Ning Zetao by four one-hundredths of a second. Zang posted a time of 23.61 while Zing recorded a 23.65.

Liu Xiang won the women’s 50 backstroke in a time of 28.09. She was followed by Cheng Haihua who finished in a time of 28.23 and Diao Jigong who hit the wall in a time of 28.50.
