There were several A final scratches going into tonight’s finals session at the Arena PSS – Santa Clara. Those scratches were headed by China’s Sun Yang dropping the 400 free.
This morning, Sun churned out a very strong 3:43.55, the 2nd-ranked time in the world this year. He put up the world’s fastest 200 free this year in last night’s finals session, but has bowed out of tonight’s 400 free final. Australia teenager sprint star Kyle Chalmers also scratched out of the B final in this event.
Katy Campbell and Ally Howe each scratched out of one A final. Campbell, of Swim Pasadena, dropped the 400 free, where she was the #5 seed. Howe scratched the 200 fly A final, where she was the #3 seed. Campbell only had the 400 free tonight, while Howe is going to focus on the 100 back, where she snuck into the A final as the 9th seed.
Australia’s Bronte Barratt left open a spot in the 50 free A final to focus on the 400 free, where she will race fellow Aussie Jessica Ashwood and American Chelsea Chenault.
Other scratches tonight in B finals include:
- Katie Grover, Arlyn Upshaw, and Chloe Isleta from the 200 butterfly. Isleta will focus on the 100 back B final– Grover and Upshaw won’t swim tonight.
- Madison Wilson and Amy Bilquist dropped the 50 free in favor of the 100 back.
- Shayne Fleming and Jason Chen scratched the 50 free, while Andrew Saeta dropped the 100 back.
even with thevturns like brian goddell and/or steve holland, sun yang still owes 400&1500.
He has not owned 1,500 for 2 years running at least.
He owns the 1500. No one has come close to his WR.
I mean Paltrinieri went 14:34.04 (was it?) recently. Who knows if he was tapered or not (he probably rested at least) so I think it’s fair to say he’ll be close to that WR, possibly better than when you consider the improvements he’s made in the last couple years.
You already know Dwyer’s about to come to the blocks with an eye patch and bloody knuckles for the 4 free right before winning in a cool 3:43.54.
Post race interview:
“You look pretty beat up”
“You should see the other guy.”
Like it.
Sun has been in secret training with the Kung Fu monks for Rio warm up pool – I doubt Dwyer wins.
There are Kung Fu monks in bay area?
He brought his own .
Your comment is irrelevant and offensive.

Controversial opinion: There should be a second Olympics for all the dopers. Sun Yang, Park Taehwan, Yulia Efimova can all compete, and shoot up behind the blocks if they want. They just don’t get to compete against clean athletes.
And Jessica Hardy. Everyone seems to forget she tested positive for an anabolic steroid in 2008
As of 2014 ASADA still only gives a 12 month suspension for DHEA. It is a positive but seemingly not that serious . I note Efimova got 16 months.
I’d be afraid most American athletes wouldn’t be able to compete since we all know that nobody dopes as much as Americans (Armstrong, Lewis, Hardy, Hope Solo, Marion Jones…)
Damn.
