For the 2014 competition the Swedes will be taking up to four swimmers (the maximum for all nations) if they achieve the qualifying standards at the designated meets which include:

Danish Open (March 27-30)

Canadian Nationals (April 2-5)

French Nationals (April 7-13)

Eindhoven Swim Cup (April 10-13)

Mesa Grand Prix (April 24-26)

Swedish Grand Prix (April 26-27)

The qualification criteria leaves it open for Coach Ulrika Sandmark to allow athletes to qualify at pre-approved national and international competitions.

In 2012 the team the Swedes sent to the championships was small consisting of 12 women and six men. They will be hoping to see are larger contingent heading to Berlin.

If the competition were to be swum today the Swedish team would consist of five men and 13 women (based on individual events).

Based on the 2013 world rankings the following swimmers would make the individual qualifying standard:

Men

Simon Sjoedin (100 backstroke, 200 butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM), Johannes Skagius (50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke), Kristian Kron (200 backstroke), Axel Pettersson (200 backstroke) and Mattias Carlsson (200 backstroke)

Women:

Sarah Sjostrom (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) Magdalena Kuras (50 free and 50 backstroke), Michelle Coleman (100 free, 200 free, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke), Louise Hansson (100 free, 200 free, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 IM), Joanna Stenkvist (200 free and 200 back), Jennie Johansson (50 and 100 breaststroke), Rebecca Ejdervik (50 and 100 breaststroke), Joline Hoestman (100 and 200 breaststroke), Stina Gardell (200 breaststroke, 200 IM and 400 IM), Sara Thyden (200 breaststroke), Elin Maartensson (200 breaststroke), Martina Granstrom (100 and 200 butterfly and 400 IM), Jessica Eriksson (200 breaststroke)

As is the norm for the Swedes the women out number the men by a wide margin. The women also have four qualified in the 200 freestyle and five in the 200 breaststroke.

The qualification criteria also leaves it open for developing athletes to be selected for “wild card” spots based on the team size.
