SwimAtlanta breaststroker Joseph Portillo will stay home with verbal commitment to Georgia Tech

SwimAtlanta breaststroker Joseph Portillo has verbally committed to Georgia Tech for next season.

Portillo was a finalist at Junior Nationals over the summer, taking 5th in the 200 breaststroke. He’s probably better in the longer distance, though strong in both breaststroking events in the college meet lineup.

Portillo’s Top Times

  • 100 breast: 57.32
  • 200 breast: 2:02.48
  • 200 IM: 1:52.85
  • 400 IM: 4:01.70

But Portillo is most impressive for what he did over the summer, tearing up the long course pool to go 2:17.95 in the 200 breast and 1:05.01 in the 100. If he can transfer that speed to the short pool, he’ll find a nice niche on the Georgia Tech roster out of the gate.

Portillo also swims for Duluth High School in Duluth Georgia, where he finished 3rd in the 100 breast at last year’s high school state championships..
