The SwimMAC Carolina quartet of Max Osman (14), Mason Turner (14), Norvy Clontz (14) and Granger Bartee (14) took down the Boys 13-14 National Age Group Record in the 4×200-yard freestyle relay at a SwimMAC Intra-squad meet on Sunday. Their time of 6:55.16 was .80 faster than the previous record of 6:55.96, set by the Cincinnati Marlins at the Ohio Short Course Junior Olympic meet in March 2014.
Megan Oesting, who took over as head coach of SwimMAC Carolina in November of 2020, said, “These gentlemen have stayed consistent in their effort and focus under difficult circumstances this season. We’ve all been affected this year so it’s very special to have something as positive as this come out of it. I’m so proud of our organization for the opportunities we’ve been able to give the swimmers. These relays mark a culmination of the efforts of many and are a true testament to the commitment found at SwimMAC.”
Oesting previously coached at Eastern Iowa Swimming Federation, where Turner swam until March 2021 when he first became attached to SwimMAC. Turner owns a dozen LSC records in Iowa, including the Boys 13-14 200 back record which he broke in February 2021.
The old NAG Record, achieved by CM’s Christian Imbus, Nicholas Perera, Justin Grender, and Joshua McDonald, was over 7.5 seconds faster than the previous NAG. The runner-up team to the Marlins, Dayton Raiders (7:01.80), had also been under the old NAG, established by Nova of Virginia (David Dixon, Campbell Nystrom, Matthew Whelan, and Jacob Johnson) with 7:03.50.

The SwimMAC quartet also broke a pair of North Carolina LSC records. They eclipsed the Boys 13-14 record in the 400 medley record with 3:27.20, the second-fastest time in the country so far this season, and a 5.4-second improvement over the old LSC time of 3:32.60 that had been set by another SwimMAC quartet in 2018.

Finally, they took down the North Carolina record in the Boys 13-14 400 free relay going 3:10.70, lowering a TAC Titans mark of 3:13.20 from February 2020. Theirs is the third-fastest swim in the U.S. for the season currently underway.

Russ Kasl, lead group coach said “Consistency and gratefulness have been two of our main talking points this season. With not knowing when or what type of opportunities would be available for competition, we constantly emphasized to our swimmers always needing to be prepared. Relay opportunities are no different and their enthusiasm for it certainly showed. I’m very excited for these young men in how they performed and how it will help to inspire others in our program.”

Does a 4×200 free relay at 14 years old really determine how successful your collegiate career is going to be?
Probably not, but it is a good time for the swimmers.
Grender was 13 at that time, rest of his teammates on the relay were 14
