Swimmer Tobie Smith Appointed to USADA Board of Directors

Former U.S. National Team member and accomplished open water swimmer, Dr. Tobie Smith, has been appointed to serve on the USADA Board of Directors. She will be replacing former University of Alabama and U.S. Olympic team coach Don Gambril.

Smith was endorsed by Gambril to be his replacement. Her background as both a swimmer and doctor will be valuable to the USADA Board of Directors– she swam and received her undergraduate education at the University of Texas, where she won the NCAA title in the 1650 in 1994.

Her swimming career didn’t stop with college, she was the 1998 FINA World Champion in the 25k open water, completed a solo crossing of the English channel to celebrate earning her Master’s degree, and in 2003 she was a member of the FINA World Championship team.

Moreover, Dr. Smith has previously represented USA Swimming on a FINA task force to investigate athlete safety in open water races following the death of swimmer Fran Crippen in a race in the United Arab Emirates. She attended medical school and Stony Brook and received a Masters in public health from John Hopkins.

Smith currently serves as Medical Director for Health Care of the Homeless in Baltimore, Maryland. She is also a faculty member at MedStar Franklin Square Family Medicine Residency Program, as well as serving as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Georgetown.
