Swimming Australia Awards 2016 Women in Coaching Scholarships

In an initiative to encourage and develop women in the profession of swim coaching Swimming Australia and the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association have collaborated to create the Women in Swimming Coaching Scholarship program.

This year 15 women received scholarships that assisted them in the expenses incurred while attending 2016 asctaCONVENTION. The scholarship recipients were given up to $1000 to assist them in the travel to Queensland and their accommodation expenses. The scholarship also helps cover the costs of earning bronze and silver ASCTA accreditation.

Gemma Herrington the Head Coach of Riverton Aquanauts was one of the women who earned the scholarship expressed her gratitude and how the experienced has helped in her own coaching development,“I applied to the Women in Swimming Coaching Scholarship as it was a great opportunity to further my knowledge, take the next step on my coaching journey and help my swimmers reach the next level.”

“Our club won its first ever State medal last month and we have swimmers very close to making National times. Since returning from the conference I have been on poolside feeling inspired and with improved confidence that I am taking the correct direction with my swimmers.”

“The experience was simply amazing, every guest speaker gave me new ideas and knowledge; meeting and sharing ideas with so many coaches from different states as well as learning from Australia’s best coaches on pool desk has given me so much.”

Initiatives such as this have been helping more and more women achieve success within Australian Swimming. One of the most successful women in the ranks of Australian Swimming is Tracey Menzies who is the senior coach of the swimming program at the Australian Institute of Sport and will be the Head Coach for 2016 Australian Oceania Championships team. Menzies has coached swimmers such as Ian Thorpe, Ky Hurst, Craig Stevens, Patrick Murphy, Travis Nederpelt, Matt Welsh and Ashley Callus.
