Swimming Australia hits last Grand Prix before Glasgow

With less than a month to go until the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Australian Swim Team will get one last hit out on home soil when they come together at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane for Grand Prix 3 this Friday 27 and Saturday 28 June.

The third Grand Prix for the year will see the swimmers race over three sessions with the first specifically focussed on short course racing.

From 5:00pm on Friday June 27 the swimmers will race in a number of short course events including 25, 75 and 150m form strokes as well as the 300m individual medley (75m of each stroke) and the men’s and women’s 4x25m freestyle and medley relays.

The results of these shorter races will then be used to calculate the overall winners of the 100 and 200m freestyle events.

From 8:00am on Saturday June 28, the format will return to long course heats and finals with the top three from each event, plus the top six in the 100 and 200m freestyle, progressing through to the finals from 3:00pm that afternoon.

Swimming Australia’s Head Coach Jacco Verhaeren said offering a number of different formats at the Grand Prixes allowed swimmers to focus on specific skills and techniques in a tough racing environment.

“This year we chose to have very different formats of racing to create some excitement and fun for the swimmers while also providing them with quality racing and skills specific training,” said Verhaeren.

“Racing short course will shift the focus to quality underwater work and allow the swimmers to target these skills in a competitive environment before they step up to race at the international level while the quick turn-around with heats and finals on Saturday will see the swimmers focussed on backing up for multiple events,” he said.

This will be the last time the Australian Swim Team race domestically before the entire team assembles in Manchester for their Commonwealth Games staging camp on July 13, ahead of the opening ceremony in Glasgow on July 23.

Admission is free with the first session commencing at 5:00pm on Friday June 27 and heats from 8:00am and finals from 3:00pm on Saturday June 28.
