Swimming Canada Announces New Intensive Training Program in Montreal

Swimming Canada has come to a conclusion of their review of the Montreal High Performance Centre, and has decided to implement an interim solution that involces a new Intensive Training Program.

In a press release, Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson said “This Intensive Training Program creates an opportunity to have a high-performance training environment for eligible athletes in and around Montreal.”

That’s a list that includes names like Victoria Poon, Audrey Lacroix, and Sandrine Mainville, and a relay that broke the National Record in the 200 SCM Free Relay last year.

This program, which is termed specifically as an “Intensive Training Program” to differentiate it from the three High Performance Centres, will be led by Tom Rushton, who previously was an assistant at the Montreal High Performance Centre.

A swimming Canada spokesperson described it as an interim step that will allow Canada to rebuild it’s training in Montreal while still allowing those high-level athletes to continue to have access to funding and pool time.

Swimming Canada is also unveiling a new set of operational standards and accountabilities in Ontario, Victoria, and Vancouver, and is looking into plans to form a Para centre by the same model.
