The 2025 Brisbane Senior Metro Championships are set to begin on Friday, March 7th; however, an impending tropical storm may knock the competition off course.
Tropical Storm Alfred is approaching the Queensland coast, which prompted the Aussie state’s governing body to release the following social media post.
“Swimming Queensland & Swimming Brisbane are monitoring the situation closely. Due to the severity of the forecast, there is a chance that this weekend’s Brisbane Senior Metropolitan Championships may be affected. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”
The Brisbane Metro Swimming Championships are set to feature Italian Olympians Thomas Ceccon and Alberto Razzetti along with domestic aces Elijah Winnington, Jaclyn Barclay and William Petric.
According to The New York Times today, a sudden shift in Alfred’s path means the storm is now tracking on a course to strike ‘the densely populated areas between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast on Thursday.’
Additionally, ‘heavy rainfall is also expected across southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales from Wednesday onward. Forecasters warned of life-threatening flash flooding, with some areas potentially getting daily rainfall totals between eight to 16 inches.’ (The New York Times)
It’s cancelled
Only sensible thing to do. I’m sure many officials, families and swimmers themselves have more important things to do this weekend.
We are all “hurry up and wait”. It’s slowed again so won’t make landfall until Friday night.
