Swimming’s Litherland Triplets are Music’s TRiiiPS (New Single Drop)

There is a long tradition of crossover between talented musicians and swimmers. Two-time Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel and Michael Phelps’ former coach Bob Bowman are both trained classical musicians, on violin and piano, respectively; Commonwealth Games gold medalist Cody Simpson of Australia had a top 10 hit in pop song Surfers Paradise; Former US National Teamer Eugene Godsoe writes a new song every Tuesday and Friday on his Instagram channel, and Commonwealth Games medalist Jason Dunford has co-released a hip-hop album.

The latest to throw their hat into the ring are former University of Georgia swimmers Jay, Mick, and Kevin Litherland. The three are now performing under the name TRiiiPS. The name is reflective of both the fact that they are triples, and their triple heritage as Japanese-New Zealander-Americans.

Jay is the most accomplished of the three in the pool: he won a silver medal in the 400 IM at both the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the 2019 World Aquatics Championships.

All three swam at Georgia though and experienced success. Kevin finished with top-10 times in program history in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyles and was a Georgia LSC State Record breaker in the 800 free. Mick finished his college career as the 10th-best 100 and 200 butterflier in school history and was an Honorable Mention All-American in the 200 fly as a sophomore.

Mick’s last meet was the 2018 SEC Championships, Kevin swam through the 2019 US National Championships, and Jay is currently training at Arizona State University with the aforementioned Bowman.

The group has released 8 singles on Spotify, the most popular of which so far has been “Adventures of Binglepoppers” with almost 10,000 listens. Their newest release is called “Complicated.”

The group’s music is mostly a genre-bending mix of rap layered sometimes over electronic beats, sometimes over pop beats, and sometimes over acoustic beats. Their base vocal sound combined with energetic rhythms is reminiscent of early-2000s NYC flash-in-the-pan band Bad Ronald, which released just one album before its members went on to other projects.

We listened to all of the tracks on Spotify today and it’s like maybe they want to be Sublime, but don’t play any instruments or have anything interesting to say. Bro-tastic easy listening, and the lyrics probably suggest the need to re-test their competition samples.

Seli was in a punk rock band even as he was breaking NAGs left and right. I believe he also continued playing music into college.

But I mean I haven’t listened to any new music in like 10 years and am woefully out of touch; this might be “lit” as far as I know.
