Woah is right. 1:59 in practice is something serious, especially for USC’s Chelsea Chenault, who has a lifetime best of 1:58.19. In 2012, she qualified for the 200 freestyle FINAL at Olympic Trials with a 1:58.64. With a time like that in practice, watch out for her name as Rio draws nearer.

Olympic Day was June 23rd, and U.S. Olympian Elizabeth Beisel celebrated by throwing it back to her experiences in London after winning her first Olympic medal. Beisel took home silver in the 400m IM as well as a bronze in the 200m back in 2012.

Kinda nervous??? That “squat” was downright dangerous!! A potential career ender! No doubt Arianna is strong, but that load, like her squat depth, is far too high.
Correct! A friend of mine who was both an NBA (Nets) as well as Olympic (USA Bobsled team) strength and conditioning coach told me that squatting onto a bench is very dangerous, because it causes you to lose that protective natural arch in your lumbar spine, not to mention the fact that she bounced off the bench. Is she impressively strong? Oh yes. Is that too much weight for her? Hell yes! The risk vs. benefit ratio for her is not worth it!!!
A better way I should have worded it is that squatting onto a bench can make you lose “neutral spine” which of course means a slight curve in the lumber spine. Spinal flexion (think pelvic tilt or crunch) is very dangerous to your discs under a heavy load. There are many good videos online about proper squat technique with Dr. Stuart McGill, world renowned professor of Spine Biomechanics.
A chiropractor once told me that movements done with poor spinal positions are sometimes a case of “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. We seem to “get away” with improper movement for some time, and then one day we bend over to tie our shoe and collapse in a heap… Read more »
