The ESPN barrier might actually be the most important one Dressel broke last week. #JustKidding.

Ok @espn mag…I’ll play along. Here is the right list (top 10) and I’m right and you’re wrong.
1 Phelps
2 Serena
3 Tiger
4 James
5 Federer
6 Bolt
7 Johnson
8 Sorenstam
9 Ledecky
10 Brady— Rowdy Gaines (@RowdyGaines) March 21, 2018
If you somehow missed that ESPN left the GOAT off its list of most dominant athletes of the past 20 years, just know that Rowdy’s take is a much better one.
Steve Nolan… you are right, their explanation was crap at best. But you missed the one part where it was the most wrong. There were not 34 events in the last olympics if you also say there are 3 more on the way. If you say 34, then there are 6 more on the way, or more correctly say that there are 17 events with 3 more on the way. So, first of all…34 would mean that Phelps or Ledecky had the chance to swim with the opposite gender… they did not. Then to say that they are adding more somehow has an impact on their past performance is such a BAD argument.
Also, let me pose this question….… Read more »
@Rowdy:
Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer ever. #18majors
Rowdy was and always will be great for the sport of swimming.
Adorable!
I love the Lezak Tweet
The problem with Rowdy Gaines’ commentary isn’t that he’s old and not “with it” anymore — it’s certainly possible to be effective in that trade well into one’s 70s — look at people like Al Michaels, Vernon Lundquist, and Vin Scully.
My issue with Gaines is that he’s myopic, that is, he always takes a very narrow narrative and if there are any noteworthy people or events outside that narrative, they get overlooked. Thus, Gaines’ commentary is repetitive, flat, and dull. A lot of this is due to laziness on his behalf. He could learn a lot from his NBC track counterpart Ato Bolden.
Gaines has been a wonderful amabassor for the sport, and I hope he continues… Read more »
I agree
He dumbs it down for the casual fan and a lot of races there isnt enough time to get into the details. My problem with him is his observations while the race is going on it makes me think he is watching a different race.
He’s a back half swimmer, Todd.
Only thing I’ll agree with rowdy on
awaiting the triggered swimswam comments on how much they hate Rowdy’ commentary…
wait and see ……..?
