How much of a head start would you need to beat Caeleb Dressel in a 500?

So is it Parker…. or PJ?
🤔
anyone find the title a bit misleading?
I mean I guess? But, like, Ledecky would need a head start to beat him in 500. So I think it’s fair for the writer to assume people understand that there’s going to be some kind of equalizer in place.
Katie Ledecky beat Michael Phelps in the 400 free at this meet and, presumably, Michael was better at the 400 than Caeleb. He’d have an advantage with so many turns, I think, but I wouldn’t be so sure she’d need a head start. If so, it certainly wouldn’t have to be much of one.
Tapered, I think he wins. Untapered and unrested, I think she does.
Do we have a real 500 time for Caeleb?
Dressel’s most recent real-meet time in the 500 came at 16, when he swam 4:42.22 He does also have a time in the 1000 (10:12.82) from that same meet in February 2013. He must’ve skipped practice that week or something.
Pretty amazing to make it through the University of Florida without ever being stuck in the 500 for grins and giggles.
He does have a 400 IM (3:48.84) from 2019.
So he went 4:42 at 16 unrested. Ledecky’s best time at a non-obvious rest meet is probably her 4:27 from high school at the Delaware First State Cup?
I tend to believe Dressel can do better than 4:27 if suited but unrested, but I could be wrong. There are different… Read more »
Maybe if he wore a Mizuno…
I actually haven’t had a good experience with the mizuno in 500 races, I fight lighter suits like the Tyr avictor, air2, but especially the carbon glide more suited for a 500 free. For 200s and under though? Mizuno is invincible.
Are you still racing?? Just got very curious to know who you are after these hints
Yes sir, I am.
Dude, please give us the time for Dressel!
In college I would need about 20-25 yards. Now? At least 200. I would also need a tee shirt before being photographed next to Dressel right now…
My best practice time is a 4:33, so maybe 10 seconds? I wonder how fast dressel went…
I’d probably need a good 25 yards
That’s a bit of a flex
I would need a 499 head start
don’t sell yourself short. I’m sure you could do a 498 one.
