The ‘A’ final and top eight swims get a lot of attention at meets like this, but many athletes have strong prelims or other finals swims. Here are some of the strong swims from the final day of the meet that you might’ve missed.
14-Year-Old Taylor Bennett from the Pleasonton Seahawks had a significant drop in her 200 breaststroke to make tonight’s ‘A’ final finishing 7th. She came in entered at 2:37.16 before swimming 2:35.36 in the prelims and then 2:34.13 in the final for a total of three seconds dropped today. Bennett had a strong 100 breaststroke earlier in the meet, dropping almost a second to finish 11th in 1:12.22
Maya Hetland, a 16-year-old out of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics, had excellent swims in both legs of her double today, the 100 fly and the 200 IM. In her 100 fly, she came in at 1:01.86 before dropping almost a second to swim 1:00.94 in the prelims of the race, qualifying 8th for the final, where she finished 7th in 1:01.21. She had an even biger drop in the 200 IM. She came in at 2:21.00 before dropping to 2:19.71 to finish 9th in the prelims before a scratch got her into the ‘A’ final where her 2:19.00 finished 8th overall for exactly two seconds off her best time.
Dallas Mustangs swimmer Nicolas Sobenes dropped more than a second in his 100 fly. He came in at 55.58 from the Summer Junior Nationals in 2023. In prelims he dropped to 54.63 and in finals he went even faster, finishing at 54.24 to win the ‘B’ final and drop 1.3 seconds today.
Finally, WSU swimmer Ariel Wang finished 10th in the 200 IM, dropping almost two seconds from her previous best time. She had the exact same seed time as Maya Hetland at 2:21.00, and she dropped almost the same amount. In prelims, she finished 11th at 2:20.62 for a slight improvement from her best before dropping almost a second-and-a-half from that time to finish 10th in the final at 2:19.29.
So happy to see a student from our school, Nico Sobenes (Cistercian) have such a great drop in time!
