This week on the SwimSwam Breakdown, we discuss what a decathlon for swimming would look like, NCAA stars Maggie MacNeil, Leon Marchand, and Josh Liendo, and WADA’s policy on Marijuana. See full list of topics below:

The 4IM vs 2FR World Record question is a pretty easy one, right? Someone got much closer in absolute terms in an event that’s twice as long, so just like math alone it seems like the better pick. (0.44s for the IM, 1.21s for 2 free.)
But! The 4 IM also seems like an event where someone that’s NOT Marchand could break it, no? Idk, Foster sorta dropped way more time than we’d have expected from him this summer, where there’s maybe no one else in the ballpark of the 2FR other than Popovici. (Tho now that I look at the results, maybe Foster still needs just as big a drop as someone like Hwang Sun-woo would in the… Read more »
Things I wanted to say in the podcast but didn’t: It felt like the world was stuck at 4:09 forever, and the floodgates have now opened again.
If the 400IM is at the end of worlds in 2023, instead of the beginning (like this year), Popovici will have the crack at the 200WR first. So if he’s in the form to do it next summer, that would be how the 200free goes down first. Not unfathomable, but we don’t know how the schedule looks yet I believe
Pretty much every other scenario results in the 400IM going first.
Re: The 25k, I like Braden’s Twitter conspiracy theory that FINA doesn’t want Ana Marcela Cuñha to break Phelps’ record of most World titles in one event. AMC (25k) is tied with Phelps at 5 (200 fly).
Sink or Swims
Sarah in LA ? Swim. I can see her dropping the 100fly and only retaining any 100free should SWE be capable of maintaining a competitive 4X100 but should she focus primarily on the 50free; the case is a strong one
CAN M4X100 on Paris podium ? Not out of the question but whilst they are in the potential mix; I lean more to Sink. USA would need to break not to medal; ITA look a solid medal bet so they’re realistically battling for the one remaining medal. AUS should remain thereabouts and GBR arguably has a strong a “top-side” if not stronger than CAN’S. Certainly possible but others still ahead of them.
M400IM or M200FR WR; first… Read more »
wtf did Trenton Julian do and why does no one care anymore
I tend to forget, but am constantly reminded when he’s selected for yet another international team.
Swimming Decathlon:
Meh, the best swimmers will still rise to the top with the proposed format. What is unique about track decathlon is that the athlete trains to be well rounded. You never look at a pole vaulter and think they could be good at discus or see a shot putter and think they are built for the 100 dash. But when you see a decathlete compete they have mastered all the events technically and have a well rounded body. For swimming the best athletes are already well rounded. If the the decathlon was something like this
100 IM
400IM
50 Free
200 Free
1650 Free
1 meter Springboard
Platform Diving
Solo… Read more »
Nice add with the monofin race.
I think having the 100 IM and the 50 free is maybe unnecessary. There is a huge overlap between the best 100 IMers in history and the best 50 freestylers in history.
33:06 Sarah Sjostrom will swim at the LA 2028 Olympics?
Yes
With Yuri Kisil, can the Canadian men win a medal in the 4×100 Free Relay?
No. There’s also GBR who seem much more likely to take AUS’s place on the podium than CAN and if RUS/ROC somehow manage to be allowed back for Paris CAN’s chances shrink even further
Michael Phelps thinks Marchand can break the 400 IM, Popovici can break the 200 Fr WRs – Which one goes down first?
400 IM. Marchand is already closer and there’s more places to improve in an IM.
SwimSwam should investigate marijuana’s effects on creating a SwimSwam Breakdown video.
pay attention to retta in this swimswam breakdown:
https://staging.swimswam.com/swimswam-breakdown-2022-us-world-champ-trials-womens-preview/
That potentially having been filmed on 4/20 is very funny.
I feel Retta’s usual utility to this podcast is getting me to turn my head like a dog when they’re confused.
Actually…the best decathlete in the world DID jump 27 feet! Gold medallist Damian Warner jumped 8.24 in the decathlon in Tokyo and would have won the bronze in the long jump event 🤯
But obviously, point taken, just insert his discus or pole vault instead. Just had to bring that up because 🇨🇦
okay okay fair. Long jump was just the one field event from the decathlon I felt comfortable citing the distance the world’s best do off the top of my head.
If a decathlete does that they should get the medal for the individual event, too.
(With the only caveat being if the individual event has some significantly different weather conditions than the day the decathletes went, otherwise I am 100% serious.)
