SwimSwam Photographer Mike Lewis Wins 1500 Free At USMS Nationals

Competing at the 2016 U.S. Swimming Summer National Championships in Gresham, Oregon, SwimSwam photographer Mike Lewis raced to a first place finish in the 1500 meter freestyle. Lewis, a California native, touched the wall in 19:02.48 to make himself the fastest man of the 50-54 age group.

That swim put Lewis over 30 seconds ahead of anyone else in his age group. Andy Cook was also in the 19-minute range, and his 2nd place time was a 19:37.62. Still to come on Lewis’ schedule is the men’s 100 back and mixed 400 free.

As a swimmer, Lewis has been participating in the sport for decades. He’s a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, where he competed on the varsity team. Now he competes with the Wind-n-Sea Masters Swimming Team, which is based in La Jolla, California.

As a photographer, Lewis has done exceptional work in aquatic sports, leading him to become a wel-known swimming photographer and the chief photographer for SwimSwam. His professional career in photography began after he worked with the United States Olympic movement for over a decade, during which he held a several executive level positions with USA Canoe/Kayak, USA Water Polo, and the USOC.

Did Anthony Sully swim? Wish I could have gone down for this meet. Could have won 35-39, Matty Roper is getting soft. 😉

Well done, Mike. That’s a marvelous time at any age. You need a nickname though. How about “Maestro”? I’m sure you’re Seinfeld compliant.
