The 2013 FINA World Championship Pick ‘Em Contest has finally arrived!

With today’s release of the start lists (see them here), we are now able to finally open our contest! Pigk quickly though, as the contest will only be open until 2:00 AM United States Central Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, July 28th.

Where to Play

The direct link to the Contest is here, and it’s also going to be linked on the side bar at right.

Each daily winner will receive their choice of any shirt from the SwimSwam Swag store.

The Grand Prize winner will receive any three items of their choice from the SwimSwam Swag store, plus a $100 SwimOutlet.com gift card.

Scoring

We’re tweaking the scoring system ever-so-slightly. Picks will go to 4th place instead of 3rd place, with the new point totals that will reward picking darkhorses. Note that “Other” encompasses anybody who wasn’t seeded in the top 8 coming into the meet. We’ve also tweaked the scoring to recognize that picking an event champion isn’t necessarily the hardest thing to do, rather picking 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are equally, if not moreso, as challenging in many events:

  • 1st – 3 points
  • 2nd – 4 points
  • 3rd – 3 points
  • 4th – 2 points
  • Correctly Picking “Other” in correct spot – 3 bonus points, plus earned points
  • Successfully predicting a swimmer in the top 4, but in the wrong spot – 1 bonus point

Tie-Breaker

All ties will be broken by the following order:

  1. Who had the most 1st place picks correct
  2. Who had the most 2nd place picks correct
  3. Who had the most 3rd place picks correct
  4. Who had the most 4th place picks correct
  5. Who has the highest overall score (if tie is for a daily prize)
  6. Drawing of lots

Is there going to be anyway to see who we picked after we’ve finished the survey? I’m drawing a blank trying to remember who I picked in some races…

What happens to those who picked Herasimenia in any events?

I made a mistake.

Ah. that would be too much work to start over. I’ve just realised that I forgot one or two key information. it’s only two events. I’ll leave it as it is then. Thanks BK!

It’s rather comical that Cameron VdBurgh is an “other” in the 50 breast.

There could be a fifth slot to pick who, if anyone scratches the event.

After reading the contest rules, a second question concerning eligibility for participation. My English says that I’m not eligible to participate as I’m not a legal resident of the state or of the other places mentioned.

If the problem is how to bestow prizes on persons living in the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, I’m ready to forgo my eligibility for prizes in such a highly improbable occasion. My picking would be just for fun and adding the excitement, and for honour of course :).

oh no.. it requires us to be a US resident?

I second swimfanfinland, can we non-US residents participate just for fun?
I don’t think I’ll be anywhere near the winners list anyway, but I’d totally forgo the prizes if that highly improbable outcome were to happen.

We ( as i am from Europe too ) are allowed to participate BUT u won’t get any prize if u win any day picks or the overall pick contest . I did win the first day for the us trials contest ; i was contacted by Nike ( by e-mail ) but was told not able to be receiving the prize as being not a Us resident or American .
The contest for me as well is for fun , learning more about swimming and see how my intuition works for this .

Okay, I still wait someone from the swimswam staff to confirm this before filing my picks.

I hope that the prizes are given to the next best picker, I mean that they just don’t go up in smoke if someone coming elsewhere than from the US wins.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to add quicly some button on the contest section that could be used to inform swimswam that a participant doesn’t live in the US and, by clicking the button, forgoes his/her eligibility for any prizes. I mean, if this makes it easier to supervise the contest.

Can I pick a same swimmer for many spots? For example, if I can’t decide whether Nathan Adrian is first or second, is it possible to choose him both positions and accept the fact that I’m not going to get maximum points from that event?
