SwimSwam Podcast: Shane Tusup Opens Up About Coaching Mistakes & Successes

On SwimSwam Podcast, we’re giving you an in-depth listen at all things swimming. Host Coleman Hodges welcomes guests and guest co-hosts alike to get perspective on our ever-changing swimming universe and break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with Shane Tusup, one of swimming’s most controversial coaches in this era. Shane had a candid conversation with us and apologized for a lot of the behavior he wasn’t proud of in his past. We kept the focus on him, and he gives a very human perspective of having to learn how to coach on the fly with little prior experience.

It was a mess for me and that’s I assume is Mel’s fault (and I usually enjoy his style and depth and warmth) , despite his good intentions. I didn’t make much sense because they were so many distant subjects, like the Hungarian swim culture (even for me – I grew up and swam in Hungary) that would take much longer to explain. But, it was still educational and I am glad I listened to it. I hope Shape is not only sorry for his mistakes but learned enough to avoid them and he’ll win more golds with Szilagyi and future generations.

I can’t stand the guy, but I give him credit for building a brand and getting a steady stream of free publicity. He probably is able to supplement his income nicely with social media sponsorship, and if he gets lucky with his next Youtube reality show, he might get the last laugh on haters like me.

If asked “What is your biggest weakness?” at a job interview, Shane is one person who could answer “Sometimes I care too much” and it be totally honest lol
