SwimSwam’s The Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 6/11/2014

There were some terrific swims from all corners of the United States over the weekend of June 6-8, 2014. Below are our picks for Daring Dozen:

Olivia Calegan, 14, Unattached: 50m free (27.04) – At the “School’s Out For Swimming” Invitational sponsored by Aquajets Swim Team, Calegan won the girls 13-14 50 free, dropping nearly a full second off her best time. Calegan also took home a new PB in the 100 free.

Justin Konik, 13, Star Swimming: 200m free (2:05.67) – Konik went nine-for-nine, achieving best times in every individual event he swam at the June Kick Off Meet hosted by Star Swimming. These included the 50/100/200/400/1500 free, 100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 IM. He dropped nearly two minutes in his mile, winning the event by more than 5 seconds.

Peyton Quattlebaum, 14, First Colony Swim Team: 400m free (4:24.67) – A week before aging up Quattlebaum exited the 14-and-under age group with three new best times in the distance free events. She won the 400, 800, and 1500 at the TWST BB & Up Prelims/Finals 14 & Under Invitational hosted by The Woodlands Swim Team, dropping a cumulative total of 22 seconds.

Nicholas Toepfer, 11, Unattached: 1500m free (20:00.97) – Swimming his first mile at Seacoast Swimming Association’s Summer Opener Specialty Meet, Toepfer belted out the sixteenth-fastest time in the country to date. Altogether he scored six best times for the weekend including the 50/400/1500 free, 50/100 breast, and 400 IM.

Nicolas Albiero, 14, Cardinal Aquatics: 100m back (1:01.03) – Albiero set a Kentucky State record with his 1:01.03 at the E’Town KY Dolphins and Elizabethtown Swim & Fitness Center “Summer Classic.” It was his best by 1.5 seconds, and 3.7 ahead of last June’s pace.

Rylee Moore, 11, Crawfish Aquatics: 200m back (2:37.82) – Moore won the girls 11-12 50/100/200 back at the TWST 14 & Under Invitational. Her prelims swim was her first recorded time in the 200, and it already put her somewhere in the top 40 for 11-year-olds so far this season. Then she came back and dropped seven seconds in finals to climb to 12th in the nation. Nice inaugural swims.

Corey Lau, 15, Minnetonka Swim Club: 100m breast (1:05.25) – Lau won the boys 15 & older 100 and 200 breasts at Aquajets’ “School’s Out For Swimming” Invitational. His 100 breast was a PB by 0.6, and fully 6.4 seconds faster than a year ago. He also took home a best time in the 200 free.

Robby Gourdie, 12, Mount Pleasant Swim Club: 200m breast (2:44.59) – Gourdie had an impressive meet at the Aiken – Augusta Swim League’s 45th Annual Junior Jaguar Invitational. He pocketed eleven new best times: 50/200/400/800 free, 100 back, 50/100 breast, 50/100 fly, and 200/400 IM. And while his 200 breast wasn’t one of those PBs, it was still a national top-ten time. His best performance (2:42.34) is the sixth-fastest time so far this year.

Luke Durocher, 13, Regency Park Swim Team: 100m fly (1:01.50) – It was his second-fastest time yet it was still good enough for third place in the boys 13 & over 100 fly at the SNOW LC Invitational at Claude Moore Recreation Center. Durocher did, however, register new PBs in the 200 back, 200 breast, and 400 IM.

Kiani Morisi, 11, Long Island Aquatic Club: 200m fly (2:40.29) – Morisi dropped 4.5 seconds between prelims and finals at the LIAC Long Island Challenge to wind up with the sixth-fastest 200 fly in the country for 11-year-old girls. She also picked up a new time in the 200 free.

Isabella Battistoni, 11, King Aquatic Club: 200m IM – At the Pacific Coast Invitational hosted by Stingray Swim Team, Battistoni won the girls 11-12 100 breast, 50 fly, and 200 IM with best times in all three events. Her 200 IM was a PB by nearly four, and was 16 seconds faster than a year ago.

Chloe Clark, 12, Unattached: 400m IM (5:15.84) – Clark won the girls 11-12 400 free and 400 IM at Charles Brooks Community Swim Center in Woodland, CA. It was her second 400 IM of the season; she dropped 32 seconds in six weeks and now owns the second-fastest time in the nation.

Special thanks to Lyle Campbell for his assistance in putting this list together.

Another young breaststroker, 17-year-old Jean Dencausse from France, didn’t swim particularly well last weekend in Monaco but he’s definitely one to watch in the next years.
1.03.96 in the 100 breast
2.20.31 in the 200 breast

His big meets of the summer are the European junior championships and the youth olympic games.

The famous Michael Andrew was back in the water last weekend.
It looks like it was a quiet, even very quiet training meet for him.

53.77 in the 100 free
58.83 in the 100 back
1.07.83 in the 100 breast
55.69 in the 100 fly
2.11.23 in the 200 IM!

A boy I didn’t know, 14-year-old Vance Sanders from Clearwater Aquatic Team, is now a name to remember. He has a brother Grant who swims fast as well.
53.83 in the 100 free
1.57.38 in the 200 free

Can’t wait to see what he can do this summer in long course.
13/14 NAG records are 1.03.83 in the 100 breast and 2.20.48 in the 200 breast.
He has a very good chance to break both of them.
