Szaranek, Rooney Race To Photo Finish in 200 FR At All-Florida Invite

2016 ALL-FLORIDA INVITATIONAL

The Florida freshmen continued to impress on day 2 of the All-Florida Invitational, as newcomers Savanna Faulconer and Emma Ball won their first collegiate races tonight. Faulconer was the 400 IM champ, clocking the only sub-4:20 time with her 4:19.73, while Ball won the 100 back in 56.65.

Notably, on the men’s side, freshman Dakota Mahaffey was the fastest man in the 100 back with a 50.96, though he swam exhibition tonight as only the fastest 3 swimmers from each team in prelims advance to the final.

Florida’s Mark Szaranek put up one of the highlights of the night with a win in the 200 free, as well as the fastest split of the field in the men’s 800 free relay. Individually, Szaranek won the race in 1:39.90, coming home hard on the final 50 to out-touch freshman teammate Maxime Rooney (1:40.07). He was almost 2 seconds faster than that on his relay anchor split, rolling to a 1:37.91 to pull the Gators ahead of Nova Southeastern for the win despite a 4-second deficit heading into the final leg.

Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert and Anton Lobanov brought home individual wins for the host team tonight. Sickert won the 100 fly in 49.21, while breaststroke standout Lobanov cruised to victory with a 56.23 in the 100 breast.

This is a heavy training meet for Florida. They worked out between prelims/finals, which is why in many events you are seeing the finals times to be slower than the prelims times. Also, you guys did the same Chicken Little impression when Dressel got 3rd in the 50 in this meet his freshman year, and we all know how that turned out.

Why is everyone freaking out about the times? Dual meets are way slower than invites and ncaas it can often take 50 seconds to win a 100 fly in a dual meet

Lol people like seeing fast times. Remember when a lot of people freaked out of Ryan Murphy’s prelim swim in the 100 back at Rio?

Swim fans can be so annoying sometimes. Everyone has to be fast all the time, otherwise everyone thinks they’re on a downward trajectory.

Rooney was fast in season pretty much all last year, and look how trials ended up (you could probably chalk some of that up to nerves, but still).

Mid season I see Rooney right around his PRs, if not under. SECs, 4:15, 1:32.8, 42.6. NCAAs I Anything under 4:13- good. 1:32 or lower- great, 42.5 (could break 42, could go 43, freshman year third day is pretty tough to predict.) Anything between those three meets really does not matter that much, and even that mid season meet does not matter that much.

Seeing these results, I really hope Florida is the most tired they’ve ever been.

Pretty fast times but not that great. Even if theyre tired thats not a good time for either rooney or szaranek.

Florida is known for doing plenty of yardage, add that to the fact that it’s the first dual meet and I’m not worried at all. Gregg Troy is a fantastic coach, he knows what he’s doing

Florida Men & Women did a workout before each session; it’s a young group, but a talented group that poised to continue to improve all year.
