TAC TITANS Win North Carolina Age Group Long Course Championship

Over the past weekend the TAC TITANS won the 2017 North Carolina Long Course Age Group Championship meet. The meet was hosted by the TITANS at their training facility, the Triangle Aquatic Center, in Cary, North Carolina. This is the second championship title won by the TITANS in the last six months following their short course state championship victory in February.

The TITANS qualified 123 swimmers for the meet this year. Other large teams at the meet included defending meet champion SwimMAC Carolina, Marlins of Raleigh, and YMCA of the Triangle Area.

During the course of the meet, the TITANS broke multiple team, state, and meet records. Notably, the 10 and under girls 200m medley relay team of Lily Ann Willis (34.93), Nicole Zettel (39.28), Taylor Cureton (33.99), and Meredith Whelehan (30.51) broke the National Age Group record with a time of 2:18.71.

At the end of the weekend Zettel tied with New Wave’s Shakira Qian as high point winner for the 9-10 girls division. Elena Dry took home the top scorer in the 11-12 girls age group and Brooke Zettel received the high point award for the 13-14 girls age group.

The TITANS finished the meet with a combined score of 3649.8 points. Second place was SwimMAC Carolina with 3303.1 points and finishing third was the Marlins of Raleigh with 1531.3 points.

Head Coach Bruce Marchionda continues his successful coaching with his first year with the TITANS.

“It is great to see the hard work of both our swimmers and our coaches pay off this weekend,” Marchionda says. “We set a goal at the beginning of the season of winning both the short and long course championship meets. Reaching that goal is a big step in the right direction.”

The TITANS will finish out their season sending swimmers to various meets including NCAC Tar Heel State meet, USA Futures Championship, Age Group Zone Meet, and USA Junior Nationals.
