16-year-old Ariarne Titmus already made a name for herself at the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships, clocking the fastest 800m freestyle ever for her age group en route to gold. Not resting on her laurels of making her first World Championships squad, the Tasmanian teen was back at it tonight, blasting a win in the 400m freestyle event in a super quick time of 4:04.82.
Entering the meet, Titmus’ best time sat a solid 4:09.81, a mark which garnered the St. Peters Western swimmer a bronze medal at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Championships. However, that result had already been superseded by her 400m split time of 4:08.95 from her winning 800m freestyle outing of 8:23.08 on night 1, giving us a preview as to what the teen had in the tank.
Splitting 28.45/30.11/30.94/31.18/31.33/31.33/31.23/30.24, the teen established a new Australian national age group record for 16-year-olds, destroying the old record of 4:06.17 held by 2016 Olympian Tamsin Cook. In fact, Titmus’ time tonight falls just short of making the list of Australia’s top 10 performances of all-time. Titmus also finished in 2nd place in the women’s 200m freestyle behind McKeon earlier at this meet.

What was ledecky at 16?
At Worlds Katie was 1.56.3/ 3.59.8. Ariarne was 1.58/ 4.04.8 . However she looks like she maybe could get into the 1. 57s & 4.03s at Worlds with some competition .
Ariarne wins the best name . Names are my hobby & I’ ve never seen that one . I think Katie could win more awards if she went back to Kathleen .
That’s really cool for her 🙂
Li Bingjie’s 4.02.52

It’s easier to find race videos of Chinese championships than Australian championships.
The video is not available. i,ve watched the other swims of the chinese trials but this is the only one not playing on youtube. Yes the chinese trials are easier to find than that of australia.
You,ve watched it?
How,s her technique.
And what were her splits?
Great technique.
I think Bingjie is legit.

Wow. After her 8.23 and 1.58 I predicted 4.05/4.06 in the 400 free and she did even better.
She’s the revelation of the meet.
With Ariarne Titmus and Li Bingjie we have new names to play medals in the 400 free in the next few years against KL, Kapas, Smith, Carlin and the others.
Lets just see how she handles Budapest first; here’s also hoping the AUS media don’t create too much hype.
Without a doubt, these performances COULD be portents of a legit contender going forward but looking at Budapest; she’s realistically going to need to swim the way in the same manner and to the same level in the heats in order to make the final. If she can do so, then that should be considered a most definite “pass mark”
Let’s hope that Titmus & Tasmin Cook can take the middle to distance freestyle to another level. Whether anyone can ever get near Ledecky in these events is another thing. However good to see the potential there.
