Singapore’s OCBC Aquatic Centre will host Team USA’s swimming delegation from July 8th-17th. Following the training camp, Team USA will make the final leg of the journey to Gwangju, South Korea, to ready for the 2019 FINA World Championships.
See the latest version of the 2019 World Championship roster here (an update on stroke 50s is available here).
Per a representative from USA Swimming, Team USA will be the only delegation training at the OCBC during the time of the camp. The training camp will be closed to the public, though the Olympic training camp prior the 2016 Rio Olympics at Georgia Tech welcomed one public viewing of a practice.
The OCBC Aquatic Centre houses two 50-meter pools and a diving well. The main competition pool is 10 lanes and 3 meters deep, while the warmup & training pool is 8 lanes and varies between 1.35 and 2. meters in depth. The diving well, which is 5 meters deep, can also be arranged as a short course 25 meter pool. There is stadium seating along both sides of the pool for 3,000 total spectators, with the ability to add 3,000 more temporary seats, for when the facility hosts major competition.
The OCBC Aquatic Centre was built as part of the larger $1.3 billion Singapore Sports Hub, or SSH, which also includes the 55,000-seat, retractable-roof National Stadium, the 12,000-seat Singapore Indoor Stadium, a water sports facility for kayaking and canoeing, a water park, sports museum, and other amenities.
The OCBC Aquatic Centre will host the third stop of the 2019 FINA World Cup from August 15th-17th. Unlike past years, the 2019 World Cup will be swum exclusively in long course.
A drawing of the venue shows the two 50-meter pools, one designated for competition, the other for training and warmup, as well as a diving well directly beside the main competition pool.
A layout of the facility intended for athletes competing at the 2019 Singapore National Swimming Championships can be found here. A ‘venue events guide’ for the facility can found here.
The last trip to Asia proved difficult. It takes 2-3 x longer to acclimate to Asia than Europe for high performance athletics. This is a good practice run for Tokyo 2020.
PanPacs was definitely a learning experience!
Understatement! At least it seems USAS has learned from PanPacs. 4-day turnaround was ridiculous.
sometimes they just loose all sense of Grounding awareness in their planning
Obviously in the case of PanPacs. But one would think – with decades of experience at all kinds of high-level, high-stakes competitions – they would have a [protocol in place for traveling more than halfway around the world. Does anyone know just who (person or group) who actually made that ridiculous decision for 4-day turnaround for 2018 PanPacs?
I had the wonderful opportunity to open and manage the OCBC Aquatic Centre for 3 years! I am so proud Team USA will be training there. I only wish I was still part of the wonderful team that operates the outstanding OCBC Aquatic Centre! GO TEAM USA
Pffff seems like a waste of money. They should just fly them over the morning of.
Good. Get ’em near the right time zone early.
Same place the USA olympic team will hold their training camp prior to Tokyo
If USA has exclusive use, what happens to Schooling and his team?
A monotonous couple of weeks
He does mind reps imagining himself going 4 seconds faster than he did a couple of weeks ago.
Is this where schooling also trains?
Yes! It’s where the Singapore National Team trains (Schooling, Quah, etc.)
Maybe Dressel and Schooling will be able to finally see who’s faster… in practice.
That was the goal, duh.
oh yes , finally they get that chance ….
How is this still a thing? Two years later, any time someone mentions (Olympic gold medalist) Joseph Schooling, there’s some lazy joke about the practice time. Do we need to shoehorn it everywhere? After two years?
Of course it was so funny
Yes
we need fun over here from time to time & solid jokes . The Adrenaline of swim nerds is rising up & gearing towards this summer champs .
For sure definitely yes
Yes. To remember the ludicrous hype about Schooling (which could easily apply to others) that preceded the last Worlds. It’s basically the two year anniversary. GMM had a special segment hyping Schooling to win and Dressel to “make the final.”
I believe Schooling was actually talking about setting a world record
” 2 year anniversary ” made me laugh so hard …..Jeeeez , we are already in great shape here 😂
