Tennessee Nominees For McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarships Announced

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 25, 2016) –  Mauricio Robles Rodriguez of the Tennessee diving team and Faith Johnson of the Volunteer swimming team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Tennessee.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2016 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 28.

Highlights of Tennessee’s nominees include:

Mauricio Robles Rodriguez, Diving, Tennessee

  • Three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll (2013, 2014, 2015)
  • 10-time All-American
  • Four-time SEC diving champion, including victories on the 1-meter springboard and platform as a senior
  • Placed third on 3-meter springboard at the NCAA meet in 2014
  • Finished career as the school record holder on the 1-meter springboard (459.75)
  • Two-time SEC Diver of the Meet (2015, 2016)
  • Two-time SEC Diver of the Year (2014, 2016)
  • Four-time All-SEC (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016)
  • Entered final semester with 3.34 GPA and is on track to graduate in May with degree in Business Management
  • Will attend graduate school at Tennessee

Faith Johnson, Swimming, Tennessee

  • Capital One Academic All-American (third-team) (2016)
  • Capital One Academic All-District selection (2016)
  • Two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll (2015, 2016)
  • Three-time CSCAA Scholar All-America  (2013, 2014, 2015)
  • 20-time All-American
  • Two-time NCAA champion as a freshman in 2013 (200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay)
  • Seven-time SEC champion and was a part of three winning relays as a senior. The seven SEC titles are tied for the most in program history
  • Three-time All-SEC (2013, 2014, 2016)
  • Has a 3.94 GPA and in on track to graduate with a degree in kinesiology

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship.  The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were Nathanael Franks of the Arkansas track & field team and Maddie Locus of the Georgia swim team.
