Tennessee Scores Verbal Commitment from Irish Nat’l Record-holder Mona McSharry

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mona McSharry from Grange in County Sligo, Ireland, has made a verbal commitment to join Aly Breslin, Annie Rimmer, Elle Caldow, Jasmine Rumley, Jordan Aurnou-Rhees, Katelyn Yule, Lauren Barakey, Margaret Marando, Nicola Lane, and Olivia Harper at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2020.

“I am super excited to announce my commitment to the University of Tennessee. It felt like home from the moment I stepped foot onto the campus and I can’t wait to be a part of the amazing team. Go Vols !”

McSharry is the Irish National Record-holder in a number of events. In LCM she owns the 50m breast (30.87), 100m breast (1:07.10), 200m breast (2:27.44), and 50m fly (26.62). In SCM she holds the 50m free (25.03), 100m free (54.34), 50m breast (30.19), 100m breast (1:05.01), and 100 IM (1:00.34). McSharry represents Ireland internationally. In the summer of 2017, she won the 50/100 breast events at the 2017 European Junior Swimming Championships before going on to claim gold in the 100 breast at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis. She became the first Irish gold medalist at World Juniors and her time of 1:07.10 broke the 2015 Irish record, set by Fiona Doyle, by .05. She also competed at the 2017 FINA World Championships. In December 2017, she came in 5th in the 100 breast at European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, missing the bronze medal by just .21. At Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires last fall, she came in 4th in both the 50m breast and the 100m breast.

Top times (converted to SCY)

  • 100 breaststroke – LCM 1:07.10 (58.64)/SCM 1:05.01 (58.56)
  • 50 breaststroke- LCM 30.87 (26.90)/SCM 30.19 (27.19)
  • 100 freestyle- LCM 56.32 (49.29)/ SCM 54.34 (48.95)
  • 50 freestyle – LCM 25.42 (22.18)/SCM 25.03 (22.54)

McSharry is an excellent get for Tennessee. She will have a year to train with Nikol Popov, who placed 14th in the 100 breast at 2019 NCAA Championships with 59.59. McSharry’s converted 100 breast time would have made the A final at NCAAs.

I’ve had a chance to watch her live and she is as strong and electric as any high school female I have seen. This is a big get for the Tennessee Lady Vols. If anyone can develop breaststroke speed, it’s Kredich and his staff.
