Tennessee Set to Square Off with Louisville on Thursday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following Tennessee’s victory over Virginia, the Vols and Lady Vols head back out on the road to square off with Louisville Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

UT swept Virginia in its last time out, winning the men’s and women’s competition.

As a result of her standout performance against UVA, senior Meghan Small was named the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week. The Lineboro, Md., native brought home three individual wins for the Lady Vols while giving the 200 medley relay team a big headstart with her 24.62 leadoff leg. All three times from her individual wins rank among the top 10 nationally.

TOP TIMES MEN

  • Against Virginia, Connolly went 43.55 in the 100 free, setting the nation’s fourth-best time
  • Alec Connolly holds the nation’s No. 7 time in the 50 freestyle at 19.92
  • Taylor Abbott sits eighth in the country in the 500 free after his time of 4:25.29 at home against Virginia
  • Abbott holds the 11th-ranked time in the country in the 1000 free at 9:11.08
  • Matthew Garcia set a time of 48.11 against Virginia in the 100 backstroke which is good for 14th nationally
  • In the 200 back, Garcia holds down the 14th-ranked time as well with a time of 1:46.01
  • Sophomore Michael Houlie set a 100 breaststroke time of 53.78 in UT’s dual meet with Virginia which is the nation’s No. 4 time
  • Marc Hinawi and Abbott each rank among the top 15 nationally in the 200 butterfly with Hinawi at No. 9 (1:47.26) and Abbott at No. 15 (1:47.88)
  • The Vols’ 400 free relay of Seth Bailey, Nolan Briggs, Josh Walsh and Connolly sit No. 3 overall nationally with a time of 2:57.03
  • Tennessee’s 200 medley relay of Garcia, Houlie, Braga Verhage and Connolly set a 1:26.66 against Virginia which is No. 3 nationally
  • The men hold the country’s No. 2 time in the 400 medley relay at 3:16.13

TOP TIMES WOMEN

  • Senior Erika Brown holds the nation’s fastest time in the 100 free at 48.17 while locking down the No. 2 spot in the 50 free (21.96) and the 100 fly (51.12)
  • Amanda Nunan claims the country’s No. 15 time in the 1000 free at 9:56.21
  • Meghan Small ranks inside the top 10 in three events as she holds the No. 4 time in the 100 back at 53.20, No. 8 in the 200 back (1:55.06) and is sixth nationally in the 200 IM at 1:58.94
  • Two Lady Vols, Alexis Yager and Tess Cieplucha, hold top 15 times in the 200 breast as Yager is fourth at 2:11.36 and Cieplucha is 13th with a time of 2:12.61
  • Trude Rothrock and Mallory Beil join Brown in the top 15 of the 100 fly with Rothrock at No. 7 (52.92) and Beil at No. 12 (53.18)
  • Cieplucha ranks ninth nationally in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.27
  • The Lady Vols’ 400 free relay of Bailey GrinterTjasa Pintar, Rothrock and Stanzi Moseley is second nationally at 3:17.50
  • In the 200 medley relay, Tennessee’s quartet of Small, Nikol Popov, Moseley and Brown rank third with a swim of 1:37.83
  • Tennessee holds the No. 10 spot in the 400 medley relay at 3:42.84

AGAINST LOUISVILLE
Tennessee and Louisville have met each of the last four seasons, with the Cardinals holding an edge over both the Vols and Lady Vols. On the men’s side, Louisville has won two of the last four meetings with the Vols winning in 2018 – the teams tied in 2016. The women have beaten the Cardinals just once in the last four tries, with their win in 2017.

Following the Louisville dual meet, Tennessee will have a week of training before hosting Purdue on Nov. 8 and Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt on Nov. 9.

The Vols and Lady Vols will swim faster than they did against UVA and come home with another great win. Our divers will dominate!!!
