Tennessee Takes Home Big Haul in 2012-2013 ‘College Swimming Awards’

The 2012-2013 College Swimming Profiles in Excellence periodical is out: an exhaustive (and beautiful) annual magazine that honors some of the best performances during the NCAA season.

Highlighted by images from our own compadre Tim Binning, the magazine gives all of the typical honors (coach of the year, swimmer of the year), but adds to it some deeper-looking awards, like most exciting dual meets of the year.

The effort is lead by Navy head swimming & diving coach Bill Roberts, who is the editor of the publication.

The big story lines of the 2012-2013 season are easy to pick out by a quick scan through the awards list. Liz Pelton and Kevin Cordes made huge impacts: big enough to be called the “Breakout” Athletes of the Year even though both came into this season as American Record holders already.

The Tennessee women were known to be good, but even after graduating Jenny Connolly, they had an unbelievable season that included a dual meet win over the eventual National Champions from Georgia and winning the first three relays of the NCAA Championship meet: the first three relay titles in program history.

The Michigan men had perhaps the most intriguing season in NCAA history, swimming carnivals and 20 yard races, all culminating with a national championship in March.

Really? How many times can Tennessee get credit for a “fake” win? UGA was not rested unlike the Vols at home for their crowd. I applaud the TN program for their NCAA performance, but giving them an award for beating Georgia is crazy and insulting.

Good try, but only 3 men were rested for that meet, they were the men not qualified for SEC’s so only one of them scored anyways. No girls were rested and only 3 guys were. I know for a fact because I was there and attend that school and work for the team.

Kenyon took in quite a haul, too: Nikki Kett ’12, Josh White ’01, Zach Turk ’12, Kenyon Vs. Denison. Congrats Lords and Ladies!
