The Tennessee men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams won their season opener on the road against UNC-Wilmington on Friday night, with their traditional open water swim set for Saturday morning.
This was a big meet for both teams. The Volunteers are coming off of one of their most successful seasons in program history, specifically for the women, while the Seahawks are swimming their first meet after saving the team from being cut in the spring.
Tennessee opened the meet with a 1:43.42 in the women’s medley relay, breaking the pool record.
Among the most notable results, Tennessee senior Lindsay Gendron won the women’s 200 free by over five seconds, putting up a 1:50.78 for the win and another pool record.
One of three UNCW wins on the meet came from Hannah Stephenson in the 100 yard back. There, she was a 57.55 to touch-out Tennessee sophomore Harper Bruens, who was 2nd in 57.64.
They won a second-straight event when sophomore Christine Souther won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.22.
Transfer Lauren Driscoll started off her Tennessee career with great success. She first won the 200 back in 2:03.38, and followed that with a 4:59.63 in the 500 free – winning by 8 seconds ahead of freshman Camryne Morris.
On the men’s side, everyone looked a hair flat, even for a season-opening meet. Among the better swims, Tristan Slater from Tennessee won the 200 free in 1:44.12.
Sophomore Sean Lehane, coming off of a big freshman year, had perhaps the best swim of the night on the men’s side, winning the 100 back in 49.66. He also won the 200 IM in 1:54.51.
the 200 free on the women’s side was not a pool record!! it’s actually 1:50.61!
They “won their home opener on the road”?
A 1:57 won the 200 fly? A 22 won the 50 free? SMH
