Tennessee finished up its dual meet season on Saturday with a sweep of Carson-Newman, with the Vols putting up several noteworthy performances while celebrating their senior class.
The Tennessee women defeated Carson-Newman 144.5-104.5, while the Vol men downed the Eagles 136-106.
Women’s Recap
Tennessee sophomore Elle Caldow stole the show, winning a pair of individual events while also putting up the fastest time swimming exhibition in another.
Caldow, 19, first won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:45.70, edging out teammates Tjasa Pintar (1:45.77) and Sara Stotler (1:46.06) while crushing her previous best time of 1:47.18 set way back in March 2019.
Caldow then won the 200 back in 1:55.79, going well under her lifetime best of 1:57.22 set at the Tennessee Invitational in November.
She also lowered her three-year-old PB in the 100 back, clocking 52.60 to post the event’s fastest time despite swimming it as exhibition. Caldow’s previous best of 53.53 was set at the ISCA TYR Junior Nationals in March 2019.
To top it off, the Virginia Beach, Va., native hit a fourth PB in the 50 back, leading off the Vols’ 200 medley relay in 24.77.
Another sophomore, Jasmine Rumley, dropped a monstrous swim in the 50 free, winning in 22.15 while resetting her best time set at the Tennessee Invite in November (22.31). Junior Anna-Julia Kutsch took second to Rumley (22.23), and prior to that, both swimmers split sub-22 on the 200 medley relay. Rumley anchored the ‘A’ team in 21.58, while Kutsch blasted a 21.44 for the ‘B’ squad.
Another notable performer was Pintar, a graduate senior, who won the 100 free in 48.37 to improve on her season-best set at November’s invite (49.11). Her best time stands at 47.82 from the 2021 SECs.
In an unscored 1650 free, freshman Kate McCarville clocked in a time of 16:31.42, taking down her previous best of 16:37.26 set in November 2020.
Some other notable swims came from freshmen Ellen Walshe (200 fly – 1:56.58, 500 free – 4:49.45), Summer Smith (400 IM – 4:10.64), and grad senior Alexis Yager (100 breast – 1:00.88).
Men’s Recap
The lone multi-event winner on the men’s side was Tennessee senior Nolan Briggs, who paced the 50 free (19.99) and 100 free (44.10).
Sophomore Joey Tepper had a sensational swim in the 1650 free, dropping nearly 33 seconds from his PB set at the Tennessee Invitational (15:33.20) in 15:00.33. He also swam the fastest time in the 500 free (swimming exhibition) in 4:24.18, having set a PB of 4:21.17 at the Invite in November.
Freshman Jordan Crooks had a strong performance in the 200 free, lowering his PB down to 1:35.04 en route to the win over teammate Aleksey Tarasenko (1:36.60).
“From our younger guys, Joey Tepper was outstanding. He continued his meteoric rise. He moved into the record books today,” Tennessee associate head coach Rich Murphy told Tennesee Athletics. “He is a guy who really puts in the work, and it’s really rewarding to see him succeed. Jordan Crooks was very strong. He was knocking on the door of top-10 times in the 200 free and 100 fly, which are events he doesn’t typically do in dual meets.”
A pair of seniors that swam well were Michael Houlie, who put up a noteworthy 52.90 in the 100 breast, and Kayky Mota, who won the men’s 200 fly (1:45.95) and was the fastest swimmer in the 100 fly (46.16), though it was officially scored as exhibition.
Tennessee will now turn its attention to the SEC Championships, which they’ll be hosting Feb. 15-19.
