With a tight team battle in the works, Texas freshman Austin Katz came up clutch in tonight’s 200 back. Katz came from behind to beat teammate John Shebat, winning in 1:37.53 while Shebat took 2nd in 1:37.94. That propels Texas into the lead going into the 200 breast, where they don’t have any scorers tonight.
Splits:
- 1st 50 Split- 23.01
- 2nd 50 Split- 24.50 (47.51)
- 3rd 50 Split- 25.11
- 4th 50 Split- 24.91 (50.02)
- Final Time- 1:37.53
Shebat lead through the 150 in 46.42, holding onto his lead with a 1:11.63 split at the 150. Katz came home hard, however, splitting 24.91 to Shebat’s 26.31 with a big finish to secure the win. Katz is the 2nd fastest freshman ever. Only Ryan Murphy was faster as a freshman, swimming a 1:37.35 to win the 2014 NCAA Championships for Cal.

This was one of my favorite races congrats to all 3 Longhorns in the A Final… huge congrats to Katz for getting the title as a Freshman!aldo props to Shebat for 2 great swims!
Still confused on what happened to his older brother — these two had the potential to be perennial A finalists in the 200 back at the National level. Besides the Litherland brothers we haven’t had that since the Vanderkaay/Whitaker brothers on the men’s side
I mean, he quit I think that’s what happened. College swimming man, there’s a high turnover rate
The top 10 performers in this event feel like the oldest collective ones.
And secured the meet for Texas 🙁
yes 🙂
Cal is leading for now (by a hair)
