Texas A&M Hosts SEC Foe South Carolina in Home Opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team will host Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina in its 2016-17 home opener at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Student Recreation Natatorium.

MOST RECENT ACTION:

The 1-0 Aggies are coming off a 182-105 road win over Incarnate Word last week. Texas A&M won 13 of 16 possible races against the Cardinals with a sweep of at least the top two spots 11 times. The Aggies sweep both relays and junior All-American Mauro Castillo had a pair of individual victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and butterfly.

Also contributing victories were veterans Jacob Gonzales in the 50 free, Brock Bonetti in the 200 back and Skylar Lake in the three-meter dive (352.45) and newcomers Jake Gibbons in the 1,000 free, Anthony Kim in the 100 backstroke, Adam Koster in the 100 free, Mike Thibert in the 500 free, Benjamin Walker in the 400 IM and Raiz Tjon-a-Joe in the 200 breast. Earlier this week, Koster earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors for his performance against UIW.

HEAD COACH JAY HOLMES:

On the matchup with the Gamecocks: “It should be a great college dual meet. South Carolina has a team that isn’t a great matchup for us because they are very strong in the distance races and that could be a problem for us. I think there will be a bunch of swings in points and momentum through the course of the meet, probably from places that neither team expects. That’s what makes college swimming great and I’m looking forward to turning the guys loose in front of the home crowd.”

MEET INFO:

The Texas A&M-South Carolina dual meet, which is in conjunction with Alumni Weekend, has been designated the “Pink Meet” for breast cancer awareness and the first 100 fans at the Rec will receive pink Texas A&M Swimming and Diving flip flops.

LIVE RESULTS/WATCH:

Live results can be accessed on 12thMan.com or Meet Mobile. The competition will be available digitally on mobile devices, tablets, PCs and connect-TVs for SEC Network subscribers whose cable/satellite packages allow access to SEC Network+ through the WatchESPN app and SECSports.com.
