Both of the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Honors went to sophmores from opposite sides of the country. In what was a relatively light swimming weekend, both swimmers put up impressive swims to lead their teams to victories over in-conference foes.

Jimmy Feigen, a sophmore at the University of Texas, was named the collegeswimming.com men’s Division-1 National Swimmer of the Week after winning the 50 and 100 freestyles in both of the Longhorns’ meets last weekend, against no. 19 Texas A&M and no. 23 SMU.

Feigen broke the 20-second barrier in the 50 free twice, going 19.90 against A&M and 19.97 against SMU, both NCAA “B” cut times. He also turned in 2 impressive times in the 100 freestyle (44.35 and 44.47), which were both also B-cuts. Feigen is the 2009 NCAA runner up in both events, and is the second Longhorn to win the event this season. Ricky Berens won the award in October.

Toledo’s Laura Lindsay won the women’s honor. Lindsay helped the Rockets complete a perfect 7-0 record against MAC opponents by winning both breaststroke events against Buffalo.

Lindsay’s 1:02.36 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:16.13 in the 200 breaststroke were both season-bests for her, and both times are NCAA “B” times. Lindsay seems to be peaking at the right time of the season, and has put herself in a good position to make a run at an NCAA championship spot in either (or both) events, and a conference title in the 100.

The official Toledo Athletics site had a great quote from Lindsay, showing that she has remained humble throughout. “This is really exciting and it blows me away,” Lindsay said. “But honestly, I don’t swim for awards, I swim for my team. I’m just trying to get better and focus on a good taper. I think I’m swimming well technically and I just want to finish out the year strong.”
