Though pictures showed that the Texas men’s swimming & diving teams were wearing jammers for most of this meet, the Longhorns looked phenomenal in their season-opening Orange versus White intrasquad meet on Thursday afternoon at the Texas Swim Center.
FreshmanĀ Jack Conger answered the calls of his sure-to-be-rival Ryan Murphy out at Cal with a pair of impressive backstroke performances. He won the 100 yard race in 47.27, withĀ Kip Darmody taking 2nd in 48.05, and also took the 200 in 1:42.50. There’s not a lot of great comparisons for Conger in yards from high school, as he focused so heavily on long course swimming, but that’s almost an NCAA scoring-worthy result, and it’s only September.
Texas men’s sprinting is looking deep as expected.Ā Clay Youngquist took the win for the white team in 44.26, followed byĀ Caleb Weir in 44.36. Considering that Weir was no better than a 45.8 in the fall semester last year, his first with the Longhorns after transferring from Junior College, that’s a very positive start. This team needs a big time sprinter to step up, and Weir might be that guy. He also won the 50 in 19.85 – the only guy under 20 seconds. Conger was 2nd in 20.18, and sophomoreĀ John Murray took 3rd in 20.19.
Youngquist also won the 200 free in 1:36.06, followed byĀ Bobby Button in 1:38.79.
Conger wasn’t the only Longhorn newcomer to win an event. FreshmanĀ Will Licon took the 200 IM in 1:49.63, and sophomore transfer Matt Ellis won the 100 fly in 47.96. FreshmanĀ Clark Smith took 2nd behind Ellis in that 100 fly in 48.10.
Licon added a win in the 200 breast in 2:00.06, and the 100 breast in 55.21. Another newcomer,Ā Imri Ganiel (who trained but didn’t compete with the team last year) was 2nd in 55.78.
This meet showed that Texas has some very good returning pieces, but will be relying very much on these newcomers to take some big points this season.

Compared to last year’s meet, this year was absolutely ridiculous. In most events, last years winning time would have been 4 or 5th this year.
In the 200 back, last year’s winning time (Austin Surhoff, 1:50.x) would have been last place this year!
Cannot even describe how excited I am about Will Licon winning 100 and 200 breast and dominating 200 IM. It will be fun watching him and Conger off course for 4 years. Although Will does not swim “traditional Eddie Reese breaststroke style” they say they will tweak it only a little and “let it fly,” Will will swim IMs for sure and maybe 200 breast, I guess.
Between me and Will on 400 IM I am going to bet on Will, but that is just me.
