Texas A&M men sweep four events to down SMU in College Station

The Texas A&M men flexed their depth on Friday night to take down the SMU Mustangs. The Aggies combined for four event sweeps and won all but three individual races en-route to the victory.

Cory Bolleter led the way for the Aggies on the first of those sweeps, touching the wall in 20.13 in the 50 freestyle. Jacob Gonzales and Justin Morey touched in 20.31 and 20.59, respectively.

Gonzales won the 100 freestyle for A&M in 44.94, with Morey taking second in 45.35, holding off a hard charging Antoine Marc, who touched in 45.36. Marc touched closed over the last 25, but could not completely run down Morey.

Marc would out duel Hayden Duplechain in the 200 IM as the top two finishers in the Aggie sweep. Marc used a 25.25 freestyle leg to beat his teammate and finish in 1:49.11. Duplechain finished in 1:49.40. Brock Bonetti took third in 1:51.84.

 

The fourth sweep came in the 200 backstroke, where Bonetti blew away the rest of the field with a 1:45.21. Bonetti finished well ahead of Alexandros Theocharidis, who touched at 1:47.86. Cameron Kerr was third in 1:49.63.

Austrian Olympian Christian Scherubl scored two wins for the Mustangs. In the 200 freestyle, Scherubl ran away from the field en-route to a 1:37.20 finish. Hunter Funk of A&M joined Scherubl as the only other man under 1:40 with a 1:39.74.

Scherubl then won the 500 by almost five full seconds with a 4:25.81. Duplechain was again the runner up with a 4:30.79. Eastman Holloway was third for SMU with a 4:35.55.

Stefan Popov officially won the 200 breaststroke with a 2:08.73 for SMU. However, Mauro Castillo Luna and Jonathan Tybur of A&M, swimming exhibition, hit the wall first and second in 1:58.18 and 2:04.58, respectively.

Mitch Glander won the 1000 for A&M in 9:17.44. Holloway took second in 9:25.83, and Gabriel Andonie of SMU took third in 9:35.54.

Turker Ayar won the 200 butterfly by almost a second even, finishing in 1:49.02. SMU’s Tyler Rauth took third in 1:50.01. His SMU teammate Tucker Wells was third with a 1:50.37.

A&M won the 400 medley relay with a 3:13.31. The most impressive split came from Bolleter, who anchored with a blistering 43.21, although the medley relay was solid all the way through. Bonetti posted a 48.31 on the backstroke, followed by a 54.34 from Castillo Luna in the breaststroke leg, and a 47.45 from Luke Shaw on the Butterfly

Officially, the SMU team of Scherubl, Samuel Straughan, Rauth, and Wells won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:03.40, but it was Shaw, Bolleter, Gonzales, and Morey who hit the wall first for A&M. The Aggie relay finished in 2:57.45, with Bolleter again posting a sub 44 split of 43.63.
