Texas’ Reese, Scoggin & Windle, Texas A&M’s Casas Earn 2021 CSCAA Awards

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has released its 2021 men’s NCAA Division 1 Swimming & Diving award-winners following the conclusion of the men’s championship meet which ran from March 24 – March 27, 2021.

CSCAA AWARD-WINNERS – 2021 NCAA MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

The University of Texas collected three of the four honors this year while Shaine Casas won swimmer of the year for Texas A&M. The Coach of the Year and Diver of the Year awards that went to Eddie Reese and Jordan Windle, respectively match SwimSwam’s version of the awards which were announced here.

Reese earned the award this year as he lead the Texas men to a team title this year with a total of 595 over the course of the meet, scoring 595 to edge out Cal’s second-place yield of 568. The Texas men got off to an early lead at the meet, picking up the very first win in the form of the 800 freestyle relay in which Drew Kibler, Austin Katz, Carson Foster, and Jake Sannem swam to a 6:07.25 victory. Texas also picked up gold in the 400 medley relay and notched a number of podium finishes including Carson Foster’s 400 IM silver, Drew Kibler’s 200 free silver, and Kibler and Daniel Krueger’s respective silver and bronze in the 100 free.

Reese’s award comes just after his announcement that he will be retiring as head coach of Texas following the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. That will mark the end of a legendary career at Texas spanning from 1979 until 2021. This accolade is the latest on a long list including 15 total NCAA team titles and 40 straight top-ten finishes.

Also from Texas, Matt Scoggin won this year’s award for Diving Coach of the Year. Scoggin lead the Texas men through a successful year and wrapped up NCAAs with 3 diving medals across 3 events. Jordan Windle and Noah Duperre won gold and silver for Texas in the 1-meter dive while Windle went on to win silver in the 3-meter. Windle nearly made it to the top 3 in the platform dive but wound up in 4th place.

For his 1-2-4 performance in his events, Windle won the CSCAA award for 2021 Diver of the Year. Longhorn senior Windle contributed a total of 62 points to the Texas men’s points total.

As Reese, Scoggin, and Windle collected awards for Texas, Shaine Casas kept it in-state by winning the Swimmer of the Year award for Texas A&M. The Aggie junior won the award thanks to his 3-for-3 wins in the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM. In the 200 back, Casas was only 0.02 seconds off Ryan Murphy’s U.S. Open, American, and NCAA record in the event of 1:35.73 with a 1:35.75.

Good point. Swimmer of the Year vs Swimmer of the Meet. Tips it to Casas. And Casas had more non NCAA meet fantastic times in other events: 2fly/4IM and freestyle events.

Casas won 3 individual events as did Hoffer, and came within 0.02 of the 200 back American and NCAA record. Not sure that Hoffer had a better meet. For sure it was a tough choice between the two.

Correct! This award isn’t just about NCAA’s but for the “entire year”👍. I know that Hoffer had an abbreviated season out there in California so we don’t know how he would have performed in meets this season and everything in that forum would be conjecture! Shaine had a fabulous season!! Swimmer of the Year 🙌 down👍👍

Well earned for Casas, I’d say his performances were somewhat comparable with Hoffer, but take into account the program he’s doing it at and writing history for, he’s swimmer of the year no question
