While the unseasonably cold weather may have kept the Texas Longhorn women from making the trip to Dallas to take on Southern Methodist, the Longhorn men successfully made the journey.
Not only that, but they made the most of the journey, as the defending national champions heated up the pool quickly with a scorching 1:23.00 in the 200 medley relay. We haven’t seen any video yet, but we’re going to go ahead and assume that the squad was wearing tech suits, at least for this event.
Freshman Anthony Grimm led off with a 20.79 backstroke effort, setting a new lifetime best. He broke out on the national scene three years ago when he led off Oakton High School with a 20.87 at the Virginia state championships. He also matched that time a year ago as a senior.
Caspar Corbeau then split 23.39 on breast, followed by Alvin Jiang with a 19.98 fly split. Usually, we’d see senior Daniel Krueger on the anchor, but today the Longhorns opted for Cameron Auchinachie, who brought the relay home with a 18.84 effort.
Based on the times in the USA Swimming database, that appears to be the fastest 200 medley relay ever recorded in a dual meet, and ranks within the top 40 performances ever.
From what we can tell, the previous fastest dual meet time ever came just two weeks ago, when the Louisville Cardinals clocked a 1:23.90 racing against Kentucky.
Last year, Texas finished 5th in this event at NCAAs with a time of 1:22.56, with the following splits:
Chris Staka – 20.98
Caspar Corbeau – 23.10
Alvin Jiang – 19.84
Daniel Krueger – 18.64
Today, Grimm was actually two-tenths faster than the 20.98 which the Longhorns got from Staka last year, while Corbeau and Jiang weren’t too far off of their NCAA times, and Auchinachie was exactly two-tenths shy of Krueger’s split from last year.
Today’s performance bodes well for the Longhorns’ chances in this event next month. However, they’ll be up against a formidable set of foes which includes the defending champions in this event, the aforementioned Louisville Cardinals.
Full meet recap will be published later this evening.
What battle?
I watched the stream for this race. They were suited up.
Okay, I have said this before probably last time Jake swam a distance event, but once again I’m really impressed. 8:49 1000 for a guy who is primarily a IMer and breaststroker? That is a monster swim and would love to see him do the 1650 fully tapered.
He’s just as versatile as Carson I’d say the one thing he can do better than Carson is breast and also seems to be a better sprinter.
I think both Cal and Texas teams could be legendary. The past few years with Eddie and Dave at the helm of both teams have been a treat to watch.
But uva has the best sprinters in the country. Just check their Instagram.
Cal is definitely going to be dangerous too. Should be a thrilling NCAAs.
Going to be a hell of a meet. Texas loses some of its diving cushion plus Cal getting super seniors back
Going to be another batttle
1:22.3 at NCAAS if that.
Faster, I think. They haven’t always had the drop dead sprint speed in back and free like Grimm and Auchinachie this year.
Obviously Texas is crazy fast, but props to SMU. There are some quick times in there and some close races. No folding and all four going 19s in the relay at the end is solid. I have no dog in the fight and went to college a 1000 miles away. Just appreciating some fast swimming.
Actually….
SMU was the team to beat in Texas until Eddie got it going at UT. 1956-1999 out of the top 10 eleven times with many 11-15th NCAA finish in those eleven near misses. Always top 20 during that span.
Deep pedigree indeed.
Let’s Go Ponies!
Frolander!
Moracova!
Longhorns are the best and nobody will ever be on their level for the next 150 years.
As a Longhorn alum, I enjoy the sentiment, but will take the other side of your bet.
They might not even win NCAAs this year…
150 years ago, we thought cigarettes had vitamins. Put that in your pipe and smoke it
