With one day of competition now completed, the United States positions itself atop the overall swimming medal table at these World Championships.
The stars n’ stripes bagged 2 golds, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals on the evening, bringing the total to 6 and double that of the nation of Australia which is next in line.
Katie Ledecky took the top prize in the women’s 400m free while the American men were unbeatable in the 4x100m free relay.
Carson Foster snagged silver in the 400m IM while his compatriot Chase Kalisz brought home the bronze in the same event. Additional bronze medals were secured by Leah Smith behind Ledecky in the 4free and by the women’s 4x100m free relay squad.
For Australia, Elijah Winnington grabbed his first elite international medal by taking the men’s 400m free tonight while the Aussie women were too quick to catch en route to gold in the 4x100m free relay.
Additional nations making their 2022 medal table debuts include France, with a head-turning swim by Leon Marchand in the 400m IM for gold. Canada, Germany, Brazil and Italy also made it onto the board, although they’re each still seeking their first gold as the meet unfolds.
Australia:
Gold in Women, Silver in Men = 9
USA:
Gold in Men, Bronze in Women = 7
Australia is now the best freestyle nation even with much less people
Just a reminder that ICU is a troll pretending to be Australian. Ignore them
I think TEAM USA has gotten off to a very decent start. OK, the 400 free was a black eye for the men, but the US men’s free relay, Ledecky looking so strong, and then Carson Foster making his international “debut” in the 400 IM in such a strong fashion! OK, MA flopped in 100 breast, but look at what’s coming with the semi’s performances today?
I think Aus and USA both started basically about as well as they could have.
Hot take: I feel like no one wants to talk about this and its only day one, but dressels been disappointing since 2019 for the most part and i dont understand why hes tinkering with his freestyle stroke. There i said it let the bad comments happen
Didn’t he win multiple Olympic medals and set WRs after 2019?
Dressel won 5 Gold medals at the Olympics which were after 2019?
Well, let’s see. At ISL Finals in Dec. 2020, he broke 3 SC WRs (which still stand) in 25 hours.
5 Golds (incl. breaking his own WR) at the Tokyo Olympics.
CD never swims his best early in meets, i.e., during the men’s 4×100 free; it was true at WC 2017, WC 2019, the Tokyo Olympics and now at WC 2022.
I was really expecting Australia to have 1 gold and 1 silver at best after day 1.
Yeah this is much better than expected to me tbh. Good sign of things to come? I hope
Can’t complain though I was secretly hoping Pallister could nab bronze and she nearly did
