Thiago Simon of Brazil won the gold medal in the men’s 200 breaststroke at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, breaking the Pan American Games record from 2011 of 2:11.62. Sean Mahoney originally set the record in 2011, and then Jorge Murillo tied it again in 2015. Today, Simon raced to a new record time of 2:09.52 and was pushed by the silver medalist, Richard Funk, and the bronze medalist, Thiago Pereira.
Medalists
- Thiago Simon (Brazil) 2:09.52
- Richard Funk (Canada) 2:11.51
- Thiago Pereira (Brazil) 2:11.93
Simon was the third fastest Brazilian performer in the event in history, and his time today improves his third fastest time by .3 seconds. His time is still the third fastest Brazilian time in history, but it does move him within two tenths of the second fastest Brazilian performer in the event, Tales Cerdeira.
The Brazilian record is help by Henrique Barbosa at 2:08.44. That is one of the stronger Brazilian National records remaining from the suit era of 2008. Barbosa is nearly a second faster than any other Brazilian breaststroker in history.
Simon led from the beginning of the meet, splitting a 1:01.73 on the first 100 meters. He finished with a 1:07.79 on the second 100 meters of his swim.
