- Meet Mobile: Boston University Terrier Invitational
The 2023 Terrier Invitational kicked off this Friday. The first finals session featured the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 400 medley relay.
The meet is a little smaller than in previous years, partially due to the absence of Boston College in the wake of the team’s suspension. Last year, BC won 12 of 20 women’s events and 14 men’s events, including diving. Participating are the host team Boston University, Fairfield, UMass Amherst, Northeastern (women only), and Bryant (divers only).
Women’s Recap
Terrier first-year Han Hoang had an excellent session. After clocking 22.63 in the morning to notch a new best time, school record, and NCAA B cut, she held off Northeastern’s Jamie Koo in finals, 22.65 to 22.74. She also dropped the fastest split of the field in the 200 free relay, blazing 22.12 on the second leg. Together with lead-off Lara Mitchell (23.64), Madison Kim (23.20), and Sydney Sorbello (23.48) the Terrier quartet clipped their own school record by 0.04 seconds (1:32.44), placing second behind Northeastern.
Koo notched a B cut of her own, leading off Northeastern’s 200 free relay in a 22.58. She was joined by teammates May Bradburn (23.47), Mary Nordmann (22.56), and Kotoko Blair (22.72) who altogether combined for a 1:31.33. That time established a new pool record, eclipsing the time BC set at the 2021 edition of this meet (1:31.83).
The host Terriers capped off the session with another school record in the 400 medley relay. Mitchell (54.80), Clarissa Hoyt (1:02.87), Kim (55.11), and Hoang (49.95) clocked 3:42.73 to clip the old record by just 0.01 seconds.
Other Highlights:
- Erin Hoyland (Fairfield) won the 500 free with a personal best by 1.61 seconds (4:56.93).
- The 200 IM was also won in a best time, with Summer Pierce (UMass Amherst) clocking 2:01.68 to drop 2.05 seconds.
Men’s Recap
The BU men won both relays to bookend the session, improving on their times from last year in both. To kick things off, Justin Lee (20.67), Ben Cho (20.36), Andy Rogatinsky (21.01), and Adrien Pierce (20.28) clocked 1:22.32 in the 200 free relay. Last year, Lee and Cho were 20.77 and 20.72 on this relay respectively, contributing to an overall 1:23.03.
Lee anchored BU’s 400 medley relay to close out the session, joined by Tony Ponomarev (50.14), Kyle Falkstrom (52.95), and Jonathan Tsang (50.40) on the first three legs. Falkstrom also won the 200 IM (1:47.74), improving on his previous best time by 0.77 seconds.
