Day five of the Mexican Swimming Championships proved to be one of the fastest as it saw a total of three new national records broken, which included two at the open level and one at the age-group level.
Not only were there plenty of records to spice things up, but two more swimmers earned cuts to swim at the 2015 Pan Am Games which will be held in Toronto, Ont. this summer.
In the women’s 800m freestyle, Monstserrat Ortuno Clapera fought a very tough battle to earn herself a gold medal and a spot on this summer’s Pan Am Games roster. Clapera clocked in at 8:44.05, narrowly taking down Natalia Jaspeado Becerra. Becerra was a 8:44.56 at the touch, beating Ayumi Macias Alba by the slightest of margins as she came in third with an 8:44.58.
The men’s 800m freestyle saw the first national record of the night as Ricardo David Vargas Jacobo managed to grab another victory. At the wall he was an 8:06.26 to break the national record of 8:06.57 held by Arturo Perez Vertti Ferrer. Ferrer was an 8:06.68 tonight, but had to watch his record fall and finish second in the process.
Andrea Mariscal Guerra and Miriam Carolina Guevara Hernandez put on quite a show in the girls 13-14 50m backstroke. The two ladies stepped up and both went under the previous national age-group record of 31.16. Guerra was first in 30.66 to set the new mark, and Hernandez was second in 31.15 to dip under it by just one one-hundredth of a second.
Maria Fernanda Gonzalez Ramirez won the open 50m backstroke in a time of 28.85, however the real excitement came in the men’s race. There, Daniel Torres Samaniego rocked a 26.48 to break the national record in the event. The previous mark stood at 26.55.
The Mexican national team gained another swimmer for the Pan Am Games as Diana Luna Sanchez jumped on board to win the 200m fly in 2:13.24. That time dipped under the Pan Am qualifying time, punching in her ticket to Toronto.
Winning yet another event in what has been an absolute domination at thee championships was Long Yuan Miguel Gutierrez Feng. Feng rocked a 2:00.50 in the 200m fly to claim gold and grab another event for Pan Ams.
