While competing on the final day of the 2019 Danish Open Short Course Championships, 21-year-old Tobias Bjerg fired off a new national record in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
Entering this 4-day affair in Esbjerg, Denmark, Bjerg’s personal best in this SCM 100 breast rested at the 58.69 notched 2 years ago. This morning, the man already outperformed that mark big-time, producing the top swim of the morning heats in 58.01. That newly-minted national standard was comprised of splits including 27.07 and 30.84.
Tonight, however, Bjerg entered entirely new territory, becoming Denmark’s first-ever sub-58 second 100m breaststroker. He touched the wall in 57.59, opening in 27.20 and closing in 30.39. That hacked about half a second off his morning swim’s back half, giving him the gold easily, while also qualifying him for this year’s European Short Course Championships.
Bjerg also qualified for the European Short Course Championships with his 50m breast outing from day 1, so he’ll be contesting 2 individual events in Glasgow.
