Day 7 Finals Recap
In the 50 free, 23 total national records from the continent of Africa fell during the final preliminaries session of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Among the record-breakers was Emma Chelius of South Africa, swimming a lifetime best of 24.65. It was also the fourth South African record to go down during the Games, following Tatjana Schoenmaker‘s 100/200 breast records and the women’s 800 free relay record.
Chelius’ time was good enough to place 13th in prelims and qualify into the semifinals round. Current African record-holder Farida Osman of Egypt placed 24th in prelims at 25.13. In semifinals, Chelius placed 13th at 24.64, shaving one one-hundredth off her prelims swim.
The on-fire South African women also swam the 4×100 medley relay prelims, where the quartet of Mariella Venter (1:01.03), Schoenmaker (1:07.41), Erin Gallagher (59.76), and Aimee Canny (54.82) placed 14th overall at 4:03.02.
