Tokyo 2020, Asia Recap Day 6: Wang Shun Gets On The Board

2020 TOKYO SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Wang Shun of China Got it Done

While Japan continued to struggle as the host nation of these Olympic Games, China made its mark yet again on day 6 in Tokyo.

27-year-old Wang Shun soared to the wall first in a tightly-contested men’s 20om IM battle, reaping a new lifetime best, Asian continental and Chinese national record of 1:55.00 in the process. That was enough to hold off a charging Briton in Duncan Scott who touched in 1:55.28 while Swiss ace Jeremy Desplanches rounded out the top 3 in a time of 1:56.17.

For its part, Japan placed 4th and 6th, with Daiya Seto hitting 1:56.22 in the former slot and his teammate Kosuke Hagino clocking 1:57.49 in the latter.

On the women’s side, it was Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey who stole the Asian show, wrangling up her 2nd individual medal here. She clinched silver in the 100m freestyle, stopping the clock in a mark of 52.27. With her performance, the former University of Michigan Wolverine registered a new Asian record of her own to pair with her 200m free silver.
