ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Toledo women’s swimming & diving team opened its 2023-24 season with a 167-133 victory at Oakland Friday evening.
Sophomore Janne Slegers and freshman Leah Evans each touched first in two individual events. Slegers won the 100 (51.65) and 200 (1:52.63) freestyle events, while Evans took first in the 100 (55.90) and 200 (2:07.49) butterfly events. Evan’s 100 butterfly time surpassed Bailey Cahill (55.98/ 2017) for 10th place on Toledo’s all-time list.
Rockets collecting one event win were senior Jovana Duric in the 1000m (10:39.25), junior Faith Sill in the 100 backstroke (57.62), freshman Leah Gentry-Tuney in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.63), and junior Alicia Zarzo-Ramirez in the 200 breaststroke (2:28.68).
Toledo won 10 events and had seven runner-up finishes. UT began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, by Sill, Gentry-Tuney, Evans, and senior Lauren Kilgore with a time of 1:43.57. UT ended the evening with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, with Slegers, senior Kennedy Lovell, Gentry-Tuney, and junior Lucie Morris with a touch-time of 1:34.86.
Friday’s victory is the first over the Golden Grizzlies since Oct. 16, 2010, and the first season-opener victory since a 159-72 final vs. Findlay on Oct. 19, 2018.
Toledo will be back in the pool for a road meet on Friday, Oct. 27 to take on Akron at 5:00 p.m. in the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland finished out their meet with Toledo resulting in a 133-167 final score giving Toledo the lead.
Previously the Golden Grizzlies competed against the RedHawks of Miami (OH) where they split the scores between the men’s and the women’s teams resulting in a win for the men and a loss for the women, nonetheless, performing exceptionally well in their events.
Additionally, this past week Oakland’s Christian Bart and Jordyn Shipps were named to the Horizon League Swim and Dive Athlete of the Week following their combined seven event victories against Miami.
