TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women’s swimming and diving team has added seven student-athletes to its 2021-22 recruiting class, head coach Brie Globig announced Monday. Madeline Blakely, Paige Chaffee, Lindsey Creek, Annabelle Haberkorn, Lucie Morris, Gillian Swift, and Cora Walrond all signed national letters of intent to join the Rockets.
Here’s a look at Toledo’s recruiting class:
Madeline Blakely | Freestyle/Backstroke | Sylvania, Ohio | Anthony Wayne
Madeline was a two-time all-league swimmer at Anthony Wayne High School and a four-time Northwest Ohio Division I District medalist. She is her school’s record holder in the 400 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and is part of the 200 medley relay record. Madeline also holds two Northern Lakes League records – the 100 Y backstroke record (57.75) and the 200 Y IM record (2:11.07).
Brie Globig on Madeline: “Madeline is a local recruit who comes from a family of Toledo alums. We are excited to add her backstroke talent to the program and have her carry on the tradition of attending Toledo like her family.”
Paige Chaffee | Breaststroke/IM | Sylvania, Ohio | Notre Dame Academy
Paige was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Notre Dame Academy. She earned Scholastic All-America honors from USA Swimming in 2019, an award for high school swimmers who succeed athletically and academically. Paige qualified for the OHSAA Division 1 State Championship Meet this past season, placing 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.05). She also qualified for NCSA Junior Nationals during her high school career.
Brie Globig on Paige: “We are proud to add another local swimmer in Paige to our program next year. She will be a strong addition to our breaststroke group and medley relays. Paige will add great depth to our team.”
Lindsey Creek | Butterfly/Freestyle/IM | Shelby Township, Mich. | Notre Dame Preparatory
While swimming for Notre Dame Preparatory School, Lindsey earned MHSAA All-State honors in the 500 freestyle. She also swam in the MCSA Senior Cup Championships this past spring.
Brie Globig on Lindsey: “With Lindsey’s distance freestyle strength, she will add great depth to our already strong distance freestyle group. She is majoring in engineering, which is a popular degree on our team. We are excited for her to become a Rocket.”
Annabelle Haberkorn | Freestyle/IM | Pinckney, Mich. | Pinckney
Annabelle earned all-conference and all-state honors while swimming for Pinckney High School. She earned her all-state accolade in the 200 IM and earned her all-conference distinctions in five events: 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 IM. Outside of the pool, Annabelle was an all-state field hockey player in 2019 and was a team captain.
Brie Globig on Annabelle: “Annabelle comes to us from Michigan and is talented in all strokes. She will be a perfect addition to our individual medley and mid-distance freestyle group. We are thrilled she chose Toledo.”
Lucie Morris | Freestyle/Backstroke | Arcanum, Ohio | Tri-Village
Lucie qualified for the OHSAA State Championship Meet three times in her career at Tri-Village High School. She was a district champion in the 50 freestyle and a five-time sectional champion. Lucie has earned First-Team All-Cross County Conference honors three times during her career.
Brie Globig on Lucie: “We are thrilled to add Lucie to our team. I knew from early conversations she was the ideal addition to our program. She will make a great addition to our sprint freestyle group and is versatile in other strokes as well.”
Gillian Swift | Freestyle | Carlsbad, Calif. | Carlsbad
Gillian is a four-time California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) section championship finalist and finished in fourth in the 500 freestyle as a sophomore with a time of 5:07.11. As a freshman at Carlsbad High School, she placed seventh in the 200 and 500 freestyle at the CIF sectional championships.
Brie Globig on Gillian: “Gillian is a strong distance freestyler making her way to Toledo from California. We are so excited to add her to our strong freestyle training group. Her positive, outstanding attitude is exactly the type of athlete we like to recruit and I am so happy she chose Toledo.”
Cora Walrond | Breaststroke | Fort Wayne, Ind. | Homestead
Cora is a four-year letterwinner at Homestead High School. She helped Homestead to three straight sectional titles (2018-20) and is a three-time all-state honoree. Cora has two top-three IHSAA section finishes in her career, including a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke this past February (1:06.19).
Brie Globig on Cora: “We are excited to add another talented breaststroke to our team. Cora will bring more depth and talent to our program.”
