Tom Dolan Invite: Saturday Finals Recap

Andrew Seliskar once again had a fantastic night of racing at the Saturday finals session of the 2014 Tom Dolan Invite at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center. The eighteen year old Cal-commit won the 200 Butterfly in a time of 1:41.33, slightly faster than his prelims swim earlier today, and over five seconds ahead of the next competitor, Ted Schubert. Seliskar’s swim also broke the previous National Age Group Record in the 17-18 boys’ 200 Butterfly (see http://swimswam.com/andrew-seliskar-breaks-tom-shields-national-age-group-record-200-yard-fly/). Seliskar then went on to claim a win in the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 1:52.95, almost nine seconds faster than the second place finisher, Thomas Dillinger (2:01.43).

Besides Seliskar, several other swimmers were also able to claim multiple wins during Saturday’s finals. One of these swimmers, Luke Durocher, took home two first place finishes and a second place finish. The fourteen year old won the 13-14 200 Butterfly in a time of 1:50.37, seven seconds faster than his prelims swim, and then took first in the 13-14 100 Backstroke in a time of 50.91. His second place finish of the evening was in the 13-14 50 Freestyle. He touched in 21.96, just behind Jackson Greer’s winning time of 21.60.

Fourteen year old Julia Menkhaus won the 13-14 200 Butterfly in 2:01.90, and then she claimed her second win of the evening in the 13-14 100 backstroke in a time of 54.69. Allie Szekely, a sixteen year old from CBST, finished first in both the 200 Breaststroke (2:10.74) and the 100 Backstroke (53.37). Twelve year old Isabel Gormley won the 11-12 50 Backstroke in 27.44. Her second win of the night was the 11-12 200 IM, when she finished two seconds ahead of the competition in a time of 2:05.63. Finally, Ryan Catron, a twelve year old from NCAP, won the 11-12 50 Backstroke in 25.69 before going on to win the 11-12 200 IM by almost five seconds.

Cassidy Bayer won the girls’ 200 Butterfly in a time of 1:55.53, almost four seconds ahead of her competition in the event. In the girls’ 11-12 100 Breaststroke, eleven year old Meghan Lynch claimed the top spot in a time of 1:05.90. Darius Truong won the boys’ 11-12 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:04.52, just ahead of Bryan Patten’s 1:04.60. In the 13-14 girls’ 50 Freestyle event, Kate Hazlett (23.32) barely touched out Morgan Scott (23.33). Casey Fanz (22.58) and James Jones (19.95) won the girls’ and boys’ open 50 Freestyle events, respectively. Jones was the only person to break the 20-second barrier at the Tom Dolan Invite’s Saturday finals session. Abby Harter of the 11-12 girls’ 50 Freestyle won her race in a time of 24.58, and Benjamin Charles won the 11-12 boys’ 50 in 23.03. Kate Douglass was able to win her first event of the night in the 13-14 girls’ 200 Breaststroke. She touched in a time of 2:15.84, over two seconds ahead of the next finisher, Annie O’Dare.

The 13-14 boys’ event saw a dramatic win by Reece Whitley. Whitley finished in 1:55.52, a whopping fourteen seconds ahead of the next finisher, Kyle Barker (2:09.32). John Shebat claimed a win in the boys’ open 100 Backstroke event, touching the wall in a time of 47.25. Shebat was a second ahead of the next finisher. In the 13-14 girls’ 500 Freestyle, Sophie Perez and Morgan Scott battled it out for the top finish. Perez prevailed, winning the event in a time of 4:57.62 while Scott finished in 4:57.80. Ben Fenwick won the 13-14 boys’ 500 in 4:44.47, Megan Byrnes touched first in the girls’ open 500 Freestyle (4:43.92), and Townley Haas claimed a win in the boys’ open 500 Freestyle in 4:19.21.
